Shrimp Deaths

Hi all,

Over a period of a few weeks i have been having constant CRS deaths. 1-2 a day atleast.

Tank has been set up for about 4 months, using RO.
I had a sponge filter and HOB filter until about a week ago i changed to a spare canister i had.

Water Parameters are as follows;
pH: 6.2
GH: 5
KH: 2
TDS: 80
Temperature: 23-34

Waterchange 20% a week. Remineralised with salty shrimp GH+.
Minerals added every two weeks.

Feeding shrimps: white pellets, mulberry leaves, spinach, shrimp crack, kale tablets, shrimp snow and benebachi foods.

Nothing new was added to tank prior to the deaths. Tank parameters were always the same. no fluctuations. 

Symptoms of nearly dead shrimp are as follows;
1. Molting problem -  Clear line behind head
2. Grazing in one spot

Symptoms of dead shrimp are as follows;
1. Poop line is visable in their backs.

Is this any kind of contagious illness?

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 5.0

Up to 34 degrees? a few more minutes and they will be ready to eat ?

When you changed filter did you seed that filter with old media?

Deaths occured before filter change but to answer your question,

The canister went from my planted tank straight to the shrimp tank, HOB and sponge filter was still connected.
HOB was removed three days after.

Feed them more protein. 

Frozen blood worms are a favourite treat.

Only have a few adults left. still lots of babies so hope they grow up strong and start colony again.

So i tried adding more protien.
Bloodworms first, but as they just graze on one spot, they didnt seem to be interested in the Bloodworm.

Then i tried sinking pellets that i feed monster fishes with and no luck.

Strangely though, i put some cherry shrimps into the crs tank today and the crs started strolling along the substrate and is actually grazing and eating now.. weird..

I'll see how things go in a nother few days. only then i can tell if theyre all goods.

Is it just me or does 80 TDS sound a bit low?

I've experienced similar issues@inkevnito.

What has resolved it for me is to:
TDS to around 150
Water change about 15% every two weeks instead of weekly
Fresh mineral balls
Mineral powder every week
Plenty of protein like jayc said and I also use brine shrimp which they love!

I'm pretty sure mine was moulting issues and yours sounds similar but worth a try on some of the above.

Also when I get these kind of issues I find it helps to just step back, assess and don't touch the tank. Sometimes mucking around too much may reveal that it could be something you are doing unintentionally.

Yeah, 80 is a bit low but i have always had it like that and no dramas. Until now ofc.
Is it okay to adjust tds to 150 if my gh is already 5?
Thats all i am worried about.

But will give it a try.
Get 150 tds and test gh.
