TBMM

Just had to share this little beauty. It is from an F8 Snow White Mischling to an F8 Snow White Mischling. Mother of the Mischlings was a  Bluebolt TBM and father was a Panda TB IMG_20150907_124838_zpsbgyoj8mu_(1).thum

That's a beautiful colour to get from the mischlings, congrats!

Thank you Jo. I must say I was surprised but I have a few of them from the Mischling tank - I have bred these guys without TB since June 2014. I keep the hybrids seperate from the 100% pure TB but some of the TBMM look as good as the pure TB. unfortunately they can only ever be classed as hybrids because at some stage they may throw Mischling types and would ruin a pure colony. I have RR, KK, PANDA, BB and Yellow KK from the same Mischling  tank and have now isolated them to breed together now. They are just coming up to breeding age so it will be interesting to see what they breed. They also have Tibee somewhere in their background - I love my Tibees!

I hear you on the tibees, I was so excited when I was given one for my birthday nearly a year ago.  Because he came from a different colony I think he only last about 6 months and I was devastated.  I assumed that that was the end of my little stripey shrimp until a month later I started seeing the shrimp I posted in yesterday's Monday blues - which unless I'm very mistaken and it's a genetic trait possible by only pure TBs, the little Tibee had been busy before he died of exhaustion!  I couldn't believe it at first, especially because the female shadow panda was about twice the size of the Tibee, I thought there would be no way he would get anywhere near her.

I've never kept Mischlings so I get very confused by their genetics and the combinations.  Is that how you get such good patterns and colours on your shrimp, by selective breeding them out with the mischlings to introduce new genes and then breeding/culling the correct offspring?

Jo unfortunately I originally allowed my Tibees and Mischlings to breed indiscriminately when I lost all my TB. So for over a year I just left them to breed together -Tibee to Tibee, Mischling to Mischling and Tibee to Mischling. They were left for several generations to just get on with it . When I found an interesting pattern as in my Marble types I would add what ever I thought they might need - so if the white was missing I would make sure a White Mischling was added to the tank or at one stage I added CRS to the mix to get my Red Tibee line. It was only last season that I started getting these really nice types in my 5 th generation. So I believe now they are called Taitibee then add KK or BB  or Panda to that -So technically the Bluebolt shown on this thread is a Taitibee Bluebolt now- they are playing around with names and I lose track but as long as you show the breeding in any for sale ad then it should be fine. It's really hard with the the hybrids finding the correct name for them. They were just fancy Tibees originally. I now have TB again and by adding TB back into the mix I should get Pinto lines starting to show up. Luckily I have a lot of tanks so can keep "pure" stock separate from my hybrids but it is important to let people know once Tibee genes have been introduced to your stock as it may not show up for a few generations but it will always be there . I would say even the best most experienced breeders could look at my Taitibee KK, Panda and BB and not tell them apart from my Taiwan Bee KK, Panda and RR if they were put together in a tank. It's only when the generations move on and the hybrid gene starts showing up that they would know and this is what is causing all the problems on Facebook pages at the moment with so many shrimp being sold as pure when infact they aren't. The hybrids have given us some beautiful varieties but now they are really destabilizing our pure lines. Still doesn't make me like the Tibee and Mischlings any less as they have given me a lot of pleasure but I always let my buyers know what the background of mine are -my line hasn't had new genes since 2013 (apart from the CRS) and the stock I got was from reputable breeders here on SKF to start with. I also have the giant gene in some of my Tibees- they are huge compared to normals!

Haha, I know what you mean with the names of the cross-breeds, it gets very confusing after the first couple of generations.  Thanks for such a helpful post, it sounds like we've had similar experiences with our tanks.  I didn't know there was a giant gene but I have some whopper BBs, I just assumed they were older ladies.  Is there a specific size where you start classifying one as a giant?

I'm not sure Jo but once they are mature their size is notably larger - they really stand out from the others - everyone  I have had has been a late breeder - the females always drop their eggs  at least 3 times before they actually hold them full term. My first Red marble girl is over 12 months and is just as we speak releasing her first batch of babies. Her sibling got berried at the same time and dropped her eggs again 2 weeks ago. That's why my marble program has been so slow.
