Timing of mating and fertilization?

Featured Replies

I have a few questions about the details of shrimp mating.  I am hoping one of SKFs fine members will educate me :).  Here is what I would like to know.

  1. How long do the males typically swim around the tank doing the mating dance?
  2. Do the shrimp mate before or after the female molts?
  3. How long after the mating does the female wait before moving the eggs to her underside?

I think I witnessed my male CRS doing the mating dance this morning.  I can't be sure though.  Hopefully I will find a newly berried girl soon.

From my (short) own experience:

1: 10 to 6 hours before

2: after

3: within 24 hours

Thanks Matuva :thumbsu:

Yeah I have the same kind of experience.

The will so the crazy dance for a few hours (Seriously fustrating since they are in a limited space and usually we can spot the special lady).

After the mating they girl will go into a hiding spot and by the next time I see her she would have been berried (usually the next morning).

Quick update:

I had the blue cherry molting yesterday morning. One hour later, the male start swimming all around the tank seeking her. Today, I just can see she is now berried.

Quicker than rabbit!

Mea culpa, I thought this male was lazy...
