DIY CO2

Featured Replies

Is it worth looking into doing DIY CO2? I've had the kit below for over a year now and have never used it, I'm thinking at the moment why not give it a crack and see how it goes, should I? It's the exact kit shown in the YouTube clip.

Also, should I look at getting a magnetic solenoid to put on to this DIY set up and have it on a timer, so it comes on say half an hour before lights on and comes off half an hour before lights out?

I don't think you can use a solenoid on DIY CO2 with plastic PET bottles.

The pressure built up might cause it to explode.

That's why CO2 canisters are metal (aluminium or steel), with metal fittings.

But that's just me thinking out loud. I don't know for sure, never tried it.

But if you go ahead, get a video on it in case it explodes for the LOLs.  :lolu:

I've seen DIY CO2 hooked up to magnetic solenoids online in clips and pics, that's why I was asking.

Oh ok.

Might not be an issue then.

Yeah, just still not too sure though, not going to go ahead with anything until I'm certain about it all.

I had to go looking to find out but I've found that people have indeed used solenoids on those systems to shut the gas off at night, or for 10 hrs at a time anyway. I think someone said that somewhere between 10 and 20 hrs off the soft drink bottles had deformed but not split.

I also found that you need to do the citric/bicarb co2 mix because yeast cultures don't produce sufficient gas pressure.

Hopefully someone else can confirm this from first hand experience.

I'm pretty sure someone on this forum has done it before, I just can't think of the user name though, think he was from Adelaide also, haven't seen him around here for awhile.

The connection has a release valve on it.
