Taiwan bees advise

Featured Replies

G'day SKFer's

I am planning to get my first Taiwan Bee shrimp soon and I really want Blue Bolts.

My aim is to first keep them healthy and happy. If I manage to do this then I want to fill a section of my new tank full of these guys so I can stare at them everyday. Lastly I want to make I keep them at a great quality.

I have been keeping my eye on shrimp sales over the last few months and there lots of great breeders out there with lots of wonderful shrimp. Looking at these sales and auctions there are pure TB, TB mischlings, TB with pinto genes, TB mischling mischlings.  I understand the different terminology but what i want to know is what effect does it have on the offspring in the future. If the parents are a great looking TB mischling X great looking TB with pinto gene will I just end up with mongrels?

My plan was to buy as many good looking (well to me) blue bolts that I could afford but after thinking it thru I realised that if I didnt get pure tb's when they breed I would probably reduce the quality (is this correct?). If my aim is to have a tank full of top quality Blue Bolts, one day. Should I aim to only get pure TB's?

I would love some insight and opinions from all the experienced members as I would like to start off the right way. Thanks in advance.

A few moth ago I visit a Blue Bolt only breeder. He got a rack with 8 tanks and about 500 to 1000 BB maybe. I believe this is something you would love to see :D. No pictures sorry.

He told me that he was breeding with only BB and that the offspring is BB (some Red bolt too) and a lot of Snow white with a little blue on the head. In my idea this were just BB of bad quality.

But you have to do a lot of selecting for sure.

Also I hear a lot of people say that you can breed BB by crossing a Snow white with a black TB. Never done this myself, but it seems to be done a lot of times.

I just start with a couple of BB if I were you and let them breed and start selecting. Also keep in mind that it takes some time for a BB to achieve full potential. It's sad but the best and deepest color blue is the time they are about to die.

I have read about something like that too, breeding BBs with black TB to improve the depth of colour. In my opinion the Mosura type BB are also some of the nicest shrimp around and worth aiming for.

Disciple, I've had mischlings produce TB and while it's not necessarily the best way to go they are cheap and the TB from them are tough. Sure you will get some culls but they could be useful for other projects and the experience of selecting will be educational.

As I understand it you probably should avoid Pinto or Tibee genetics unless those are what you're aiming for. They will make a mess of your BBs.

Thanks Shrimpmaster for the tips and you are correct I would love to see that rack lol. It would be a sight to see. 1000 BB's :startle: I just cant imagine

Pictures of blue bolts and OEBT are what drew me into this amazing hobby and I am looking forward to achieving my first main goal.

Thanks a lot Kizshrimp. I will keep away from the those with the Pinto or Tibee genes.

Yeah the aim is to get a tank full of Extreme BB's and Mosura BB's.

From the above I will aim to get 5-6 good quality bb's. If possible I will go with pure TB BB's but if that is not possible I will get TBM BB's but I will avoid any with the pinto or tibee genes.
