So I have several types of cherries and while setting up a few tanks I had them in another tank in which a blue velvet crossed with a YCS. so this was her first batch of eggs so there wasn't many but there were two with these different patterns. they are only a few months old but there is small stripes on the underneath and on top that seem somewhat random. I think I heard that blue velvets can throw back rillis or something, I was wondering what people thought about it and what it is/ where it came from. what ever it is, it looks cool and different so I cant wait until it grows up a bit more.

Looks like its reverted back to wild type. I had a few of these come out in my rilis and i got excited too but basically its a cull

Yes when you let colours interbreed you will get wild type. Some are interesting but it's best to cull them and keep colours in seperate tanks. That's why we end up with so many tanks!

When you guys say cull, what are you actually doing?

"To remove the unwanted animal so it doesn't continue breeding with the good stock and thus diluting the desired traits. eg colour"

 

What people do with the culled shrimp can vary. 

From keeping it in a separate tank/pond, to feeding it to fish, to destroying it.

 

I try to keep them in a separate tank until the next generation appears to see if there is anything interesting, but that's due to me experimentations. 

I keep my culls in an outdoor pond. From time to time I catch out as many as I can to see if there are any good finds in there. It's quite surprising what you can get from culls even the wild type but you need to keep the" finds"  seperate from your main colony until you know they are breeding true otherwise you will still dilute the quality of your main stock. No wonder we all end up with MTS.
