Swapping filters question

Featured Replies

I have a newly cycled tank with 4 Aquaclear 50 HOBs.  I want to replace one of the HOBs with a Fluvial 205 canister filter .  All of the media in the canister is new so there isn't any bacteria.  How long should I run it on the tank before I can safely remove the HOB.

The tank is a planted 29 gallon.  It has 3 medium sized GBRs and 8 otos in it.  Three of the HOBs have ceramic media.  The last one has a bag of Purigen and a little ceramic media.

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.  Thanks.

a min. of 2-3 week's or put the media from hob's in the cannister. although if 3 out of 4 hob's are going to remain on the tank you could prob. just swap without any drama as the media in 3 hob's will be fine till the can. is established.

Thanks petfish.

I just got some MarinePure media that I want to use so I compromised and took half of the media from the HOB and used it in the canister.  Since the canister holds a lot more than the HOB, that only filled 1/2 of one of the canister trays so I was able to use one and a half trays worth of the Marine Pure.  I think I'll let it run this way for 2 weeks before I remove one of the HOBs.

Since each HOB is rated to handle a 50 gallon tank, I should have way more filtration than is required with 3 of them running.  Since the tank only recently finished cycling though, I don't want to take any chances.

Thanks again.

YEP, better to be safe than sorry.
