Is Frozen Water ok?

Featured Replies

so my shrimp tank is currently abit hot, and i want to cool it down abit with a block of ice, is anythin bad with putting ice in the water? it be like a mini 2L cold water change :P

ive seen people leave it in a bottle, and never seen just ice floting around so thought id ask

It's a better idea to use a bottle with frozen water in it, that way you don't change the water parameter once the ice melts.

Or freeze your aquarium water in the bottles

Or get a pedestal fan and put it literally on top of your tank

ok so nothing wrong with it, yea guess i can use aquarium water, that be good too

I use rain water and freeze it in a fish bag. That way when it melts it doesn't affect water quality and can be refrozen for another day.

why rain water then? why not normal water? since you said it can be refrozen, im guessing you dont take it out the bag

i was just wondering if freezing it changed the water conditions or anything,

think what ill do is freeze the tank water and pop the ice in the water, and fill it up agian to freeze

Freezing the water doesn't change its parameters. But depending on what water you freeze, as it melts it will change the parameters of the water in the tank.

For example, tap water generally has a high TDS. So if you freeze tap water and add it to your shrimp tank, as the frozen water melts, it will increase the TDS of all the water in your tank.

Likewise if you froze RO water, as it melted it would reduce the TDS in your tank.

Hence this is why the guys have reccomended that you use aquarium water to create your frozen blocks. It will have the same parameters as the water in your tank. So it wont change anything when it melts.

It's easier in a bottle then, isn't it?

You can use tap water, tank water, rain or RO water in the bottle, and it's easier to clean the bottle before it goes in the freezer. My other half doesn't like it if the bottle was in a tank and went straight into the freezer next to food, without it being washed.

The bottle of water can be reused as many times as you need. I have a 600ml bottle in the freezer for emergencies.

There is little risk of the bottle breaking and leaking like a plastic fish bag.

What about beer? C'mon, it's that time of year...

Don't waste the beer !

:)

I'd just take some tank water and bottle it, freeze it and use that, if the bottle cracks it'll be the same water that's already in the tank, also will be easy to use again and again plus easy to just clean the bottle before putting back into the freezer.

Isn't that what I said?
