Trip to Jamberoo

Featured Replies

I had a week in Jamberoo house sitting with a friend. We did some shrimping and mossing. We both managed to catch a riffle shrimp - I was so excited because I hadn't expected to have any success. Mostly caught glass shrimp (Paratya) in this stream

Also we caught this fish - any ID for it?

( sorry it is blurry, my friend didn't know how to use my camera.)

I also saw a lot of these pointy tube things attached to rocks in clusters. They are about 1.5 cm long. They move!

Would like to know what they are?

Hey Jane,

The fish is definitely a gudgeon of some kind, something like a species of Gobiomorphus. Can't say for certain which species as I really need a side on shot.

The moving tubes are likely caddisfly larvae. They build the tubes using silk and bits of plant material. If you squeeze them gently on the closed end, the larvae will poke out.

Good work on the riffles too.

I agree. Definitely looks to be a gudgeon. We have empire and spotted gudgeons in NSW. If the one you found has purpleish spots on it then it must go back. Very endangered. Very rare find indeeed. Look up purple spotted gudgeon NSW and empire gudgeon.

That would be a super find if it was a purple spot in NSW. Having worked with purple spots in the past, the head shape looks wrong for a Mogurnda (purple spot) as they are more bulky and less pointed. Purple spots are much less rare in QLD, luckily, as they are super good looking and interesting aquarium subjects.

another nice trip :) wish can find someone to do trip with same interest are fun! keep coming up love it :)

Jamberoo is such a lovely place :)
