Shrimping in the River Torrens

Featured Replies

Hi there just thought id share my shrimping experiences in the River Torrens right in the heart of good old Adelaide :)

Well iv been shrimping in the same spots for nearly 4 years now (yeah long time ay) and iv always been able to find shrimp all year round. Up until the last year or so iv unfortunately found gambusia but the last 2 times i went i found none (huge plus there). Usual fish species i find are gudgeons (dwarf and normal flathead gudgeons) but the last few times iv been iv also found (what im pretty sure are rainbows) murray darling rainbows which i release as i dont want to bother the local population. A while ago i had found carp gudgeons but not on the last couple times iv been. I find the odd tandanus here and there (last was a little 4cm one) but i always release them also. Of course theres also yabbies but i dont keep them.

Heres a couple pics from my last trip

Flathead Gudgeon

Thanks for looking :)

Very interesting dude, thanks for sharing! :victorious:

Very cool, what method do you use for catching them?

Well I used to use a large aquarium fish net. Just picture having to lay on the bank to dab the net in the plants lol. Now I'v got myself a cheapo butterfly net with a decent length handle. Just go along the edges and yeah dab the net into the plants. I don't get heaps but a hour will land me at least 10-15 shrimp

Hi KFenk, I must say I'm quite surprised by your finds!!!! I've always assumed the Torren's was full of junk and blue green algae and probably wouldn't have much living in it. Maybe I should get my backside down there and stop assuming :encouragement: Have you had any luck anywhere else around Adelaide, or the hills? I might have to go explore the local waterways in the next couple of weeks......

Did your Berried Paratya Aus. have any surviving babies?

Ooooh nice!  I asked about all this a couple of years ago but no one on to answer.  Thinking about going myself in a weekend or two.

Pyriel, if you are heading to the torrens, Places I have caught natives as mentioned above are paradise interchange-St Peters, then down Lockleys way. Further up Gorge Rd some of the creeks e.g. 6th creek, Galaxis, brown and rainbow trout, and other little natives. The Onk has same sort of thing, don't know about tandanus and rainbows. Ive heard these have been stocked in the torrens by Native hobbyists. A lot of the wetlands that have been created in the Sailsbury/Mawson Lakes areas have a lot of little natives especially carp gudgeons and congolli. Sweep netting like karl mentioned or using the box like shrimp nets full of different fishy foods will get you a good catch. Winter is a bit slower but still ok with spring/summer best.

Good luck!! :thumbsu:

I never realised that the Torrens had life stock in there, mind you I haven't been there since I was a kid either, what are the Shrimp like? Healthy? I'm not in Adelaide, I'm stuck out in the country so no Shrimp around where I am.
