Difference Between Sunkiss and Pumpkin shrimp

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I get asked this question at least once a week by someone (what is the difference between Sunkiss and pumpkin)

so thought i would just make it easy for everyone and show the difference.

This is what is being sold and called a sunkiss

Both shrimp are same age and sex. 10-11mm females in exactly same water conditions.

You can easily tell the difference apart between these as the pumpkin in solid thick color and sunkiss is clear orange color.

I would say the colour is about right, but I am working on solid sunkist as well. So maybe just the difference in the colour shade and not the solidness would be a better description of the difference.

agree mate, that would be correct for breeders like you and I. but this is just a easy Picture reference for the majority :)

please add to this thread anything you can when you make progress on the line your working on.

There are many variations in the color.

Id be happy to. I think the sunkist/pumpkin shrimp are a really underrated shrimp in this hobby. I believe it stems from the number of diluted-coloured ones floating around.

That pumpkin is absolutely awesome Dean.

I've got the pumpkins & sunkist, and to really keep them separated, there's a lot of selective breeding/culling to be done ! I think Ive got like 5 colour variations ATM :-(

Here is where I'm up to with my sunkists. Photo taken today.

looking very nice mate, :) good work.

Very nice shrimp heavyd. I have to agree about pumpkins and sunkist shrimo being under rated. But I think most cherries and rili fall in the same boat. I think its because a lot of people find the beaty of a shrimp in its price tag. Not talking about anyone just a generalisation. Not trying to offend or upset anyone im siply saying. We usually take more time to perfect something if its worth more..

Very informative.

Thanks.

Am I correct in saying that with the pumpkins, the males are of similar color?

And nice pic heavyd.

I think rarity definitely plays a big part in people's perception of beauty, but it may also be the challenge of keeping the more difficult shrimp and the variability in the patterns that you can achieve with the tigers and TBs. I know I will eventually give them a proper go, but I'm still obsessed with my cherries and CRS/CBS and barely have the tank space to do them justice.

Well put dude :encouragement: nice sunkist too by the way, stunning colour on them & Deans pumpkins definitely deserve a mention, beautiful solid colour mate, well done! :victorious:

Wish I had the space, beautiful colour in those shrimp, Go Cherries Go!
