So I've finally found a new place to rent, Which means I can setup my new 40L tank to replace my 20L :triumphant:

I've been doing some research on products and things for this tank as I'm wanting to do it right the first time this time lol.

I've been looking into canister filters for it as I don't wanna go a sponge/corner filter on this tank. I really wanna keep the equipment inside the tank as minimal as possible.

I've been looking into the Eden 511 canisters and found them to look pretty good for what I am after, They can even be used with a add on part to have a heater inbuilt in them which would take 1 more thing out of the tank.

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with these filters, or if anyone knows of another filter that would be well suited for a 40L tank ?

The only other thing I could really find/think of was using another canister filter with a Hydor inline heater. However I can only find them in a 200w minimum size and am worried about using a 200W in such a small tank, If it ever got a broken thermostat it'd fry my shrimp. And even if 200W is too much in a small tank even under good operating conditions.

I would go for a Eheim 2213 + Jager 50w heater. You could always build yourself an inline heat casing of your worried about the hydor. Though, there is nthing wrong wth using the hydor as many use it on 30cm cubes 27L.

How did you find the 2213 with a smaller tank? Did you have to reduce the flow at all or is it fine to use at full flow?

Am just a little concerned at the flow rate inside the tank with a canister designed for larger tanks, I picture a bunch of shrimp getting blown all over the place lol.

Flow is very weak. Seems perfect on the 12L. Might be because i have packed the lot with media and even added a prefilter though ;)

But with an inline heater, the flow will slow quite a bit. The 2213 also has over 3x bio media capacity over the eden.

I've got an aquaone 1000L/H running a ~90L cube, I've just basically doubled the amount of media in the canister and the flow rate is around 50%. Less maintanence and more good bacteria, although I can't comment on how good this is for the pump inside (these filters are cheap so I don't mind).

Although running the Hydor or similar will probably slow it down considerably.

Thanks for the reply, I think I'll try the canister with a hydor. Worse comes to I'll just throw them on my 100L and get the Eden I guess.

lil trick i learnt about reducing flow= drill bigger holes in the spray bar. think of it as holding your thumb on a garden hose....

That's a great way to reduce the pressure of the water being outputted, but the flow rate of the filter will either remain the same or actually increase.
