Stainless steel mesh for tank divider

Featured Replies

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this product is appropriate for aquarium use - specifically with shrimp.

http://www.cyclone.com.au/products/stainless-steel

I found it at bunnings at it states that it is Marine grade 316 stainless steel. My concern is that it is also powder coated in black.

Any advice would be appreciated.

i can not comment on the product that you have shown above but this is the stuff i use for dividers or filters etc

i use the 950 mircon mesh for everything. if you download the PDF you can see all the different sizes and tech data.

it comes in big sheets/rolls and you can cut it with scissors to what ever size you need.

Hey Dean,

I sent you a P.M.

Cheers,

D

Sorry to intrude but I called that metalmesh company and they're after $150 for a 1.2 x 1metre sheet of 1mm woven stainless. Does that sound right to you Dean? I didn't think it was quite that pricy!

not sure about that price mate as i bought 10 meters of it :)

and the stuff i got was Bolting cloth not woven stainless...

might be a difference there?

Stainless steel mesh food drainer from the $2 shop, worked out to be 30cm 30cm or so for $2.50

:D

Just an update:

A big shout out to Dean! Thanks for your generosity with the mesh. I made one of the tank dividers today. It came out alright, but I'll admit I made it a bit too big. It kind of bulges in the tank, but, to be honest, I'd rather it's too big and still has a snug fit, then too small, with gaps.

A note for anyone attempting this: WEAR GLOVES!! This stuff draws blood every time you touch the stuff lol

A picture of the final product:

What did you use for the edged mate? Looks good

Got the idea from Nogi. Poster hangers. I 'borrowed' them from work.

brilliant thats exactly what i want! can we have a pick of it in the tank???

Good job Heavy. I.M.E, I noticed that shrimp are crafty little buggers and will have no trouble going 'walkies' over that to check out what's on the other side. Even if the top is out of water. I had a pre-filter on an inlet pipe and later on discovered scores of dried up high grade shrimp on the floor. They had crawled about 3 inches out of the water up the filter and out a tiny corner in the lid... Now back to the divider, I have glass dividers with some fine plastic mesh covering the holes. The mesh towards the top provided enough grip for them to get in to the next section. No biggie for me as I'm only seperating CBS grades. But if you're seperation is more important, then you may need to get some filter hose and cut down one entire edge and place it on the very top of the divider. I did it and that stopped the little Houdini buggers.

@Brado: I'm embarrassed to put a pic of it in the tank. As i mentioned it's a bit big, so bulges in the tank and looks very average. BUT, it is tight, so the shrimp shouldnt be able to squeeze around the sides.

@JustJamie: Thanks for the heads up. I will have to see how they are with this divider. The top of the divider is capped with the poster hanger, which is smooth plastic. Not sure if they would be able to get grip on that. Time will tell.

Try Officeworks or stationery-type shops.
