Dean's not so secret anymore Shrimp formula!!!

Featured Replies

This is one of a few different formulas i use in my shrimp tanks.

This formula is used for the promotion of health, growth, strength, color & Breeding.

Ingredients

Bacillus Subtillis Natto 3.0x109 (3 billion cfu/g)

Instantized BCAA Powder. (2:1:1 ratio of L-leucine. L-Isoleucine & L-Valine).

Chitosan. (98% pure.)

Product details

#1. Bacillus subtilis, is a Gram-positive, catalase positive bacterium.

#2. (BCAA) Branched-chain amino acid is an amino acid having aliphatic side-chains with a branch (a carbon atom bound to more than two other carbon atoms). Among the proteinogenic amino acids, there are three BCAAs: leucine, isoleucine and valine.

#3. Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide composed of randomly distributed β-(1-4)-linked D-glucosamine (deacetylated unit) and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (acetylated unit). It is made by treating shrimp and other crustacean shells with the alkali sodium hydroxide.

Info

I mix the following amounts of all three products into a 2ltr glass bottle, and then add RO water.

Give it a good shake for a few minutes and then leave it in a dark cool place for 14 days, only taking it out to give it a shake once a day.

0.5 Grams BSN + 2 Grams BCAA + 1.5 Grams Chito.

Now I am no scientist and cannot explain in great detail how or why it works, but what I can say is that the shrimp that get this treatment of 5ml once a week added directly to the water, show exceptional colour, health and increased breeding rates. Also shrimp seem to breed and berry a little earlier than normal.

Lol... Dang Dean you just took me back more than 20yrs back to when I did my bachelor of biochem. It's All about organic chemistry then ha?..... Thanks for the info.

Muchas Gracias smilie_ga_054.gif

Great write Dean, have never heard of Bacillus subtilis before. Any word on where we can source these ingredients? The pure chitosan is something i want to give a go definitely.

Also where did you come across this recipe?

@Eshrimp, flash back lol, i wish i had of been smart enough to study more at school, love playing the chemist though :) i think organic will win over synthetic 85% of the time...

@Rob, Bacillus is the bacteria used to make Natto! which is a favorite traditional Japanese dish :) it stinks but is good.....

The ingredients are actually very hard to get a hold of (sort of like benzyl methyl ketone (BMK) ) lol

you need to be a licensed business to purchase some of them. (BCAA & Chito)

the recipe is something i made up after doing some research on improving my own health.

The chito is to pure to create the same breeding effect as the Benibachi breeding liquid unfortunately. it is so highly processed that it barley contains the pheromones that induce the shrimp. its more about speeding up the breeding rates and keeping them healthy :)

So how would one go about getting these ingredients if they don't own a licensed business? I honestly have no idea where to source any of that stuff but would love too. Anything to help me keep and breed shrimp successfully.

Nice one Matt, the stuff I got is pure and what they use to make products like that :)

I don't know what the extra additives in premixed products are or if they are safe for shrimp.

Time to throw some bottles of this magic liquid onto the online store ;)

Now iv done it! The power has just gone out in my area!!!

I guess I should have mentioned " benzyl methyl ketone (BMK)"

Now the Feds are coming lol

This is not something for the novic shrimp keeper unfortunately, I killed a lot of shrimp trialling and perfecting this formula. I killed a lot of shimp doing it. My dosage rates are what works in my tabnks with the volume of water I have etc.

My advice is that if you want to try stuff like this, set up another tank and do some experimenting first.

If you want to try and source the pure products, contact some pharmacutical companies to see if you can convince them of the need for it :)

Helicopters circling, dogs barking and all the shrimp hiding there stash of BMK lol

So the Shrig's secret is a probiotic? Cutting edge stuff mate, probiotics have only really come into their own in commercial aquaculture in recent years. Bacillus spp. are one genus I've seen commonly used in commercially available probiotics for aquaculture but I've yet to see it in a probiotic for aquariums.

Actually the feds would have to be registered members of the forum...I think you're safe Dean... Myself... I'm not, I had to google it.....

Sounds like Breaking Bad. Perhaps we can have a show with Dean called Shrimping Safely or Shrimping Bad... It needs some sort of Breaking Bad type reference....

If this mix is as volatile as you think then best not to sell it to people. I might hand it to "Chemical Ollie" who will promptly tell me something that I'll forget in a few seconds.

Lol, the bacillus is a strange one indeed. Without it in the formula the chito does not do much.

The formula goes from a clear watery fluid, to a thick glugy fluid which the shrimp then forage on

When it is put into the tank. So I'm assuming that it is alive and multiplying in the bottle?

  • Author

There is no BMK in it :) that was a joke about how hard it is to get :)

Now iv opened a can of worms

Aren't a lot of those ingredients found in protein/nutrition formulas? My gym junkie friend takes a lot of protein shakes etc...and I noticed some of the ingredients are quite familiar.

BCAA and chito are in a huge amount of different products, but they are mixed and diluted with all sorts of other ingredients that I don't know if they are safe for shrimp.

Add some yakult next time. I heard the shirota strain aids shrimp digestion,

Boom!!! Thanks for the formula dean. my shrimp are not only gonna be nice and healthy but super muscly as well :p

Now we know how he gets his green HULK shrimp! LOL!

@gbang BOOM! you crack me up, almost every post you do there's some explosion.

think about it....g-BANG....BOOM.

lol yeah i have a thing with explosions lol. my friends are bad influences. i blame them
