OE red devil shrimplet survival rate

Featured Replies

Hi, I am new to keeping OE red devil. I'm not new to keeping shrimp though, been keeping shrimp for over 17 years now. However, the OE red devil shrimplet have very low survival rate, less then 20% for me. Is that normal?  I am also curious how people breed OE red devil are they just extreme red wine or they came from red tiger shrimp? My current stock came from Taiwan.

My Parameters:

TDS: 130-140

pH: 6.3ish

gH:5-6

kH:0-1

I haven't kept these but have seen them for sale on one of the suppliers of shrimp I have bought from here in the UK for £40 each (though they don't have any in stock at the moment). They are quite expensive from them so I expect they don't produce a lot of offspring in a batch! I think they are probably blind (or almost) due to inbreeding, as with other orange eye shrimp types and this may be the reason they are more difficult to breed and successfully raise in larger numbers as with more ordinary shrimps?

Your parameters look perfect.  Welcome to the forum!

Hopefuly someone with experience of these extreme shrimps will read and reply to your post?

OERT (Orange Eye Red Tiger) can be a cross between (Extreme Red Wine x Red Tiger) or (Ruby Red Taiwan bees x Red tiger). Red Devil is just a marketing name.

They should be kept at Taiwan Bee water parameters. Your listed parameters look fine, but what about temps?

And what have you tried feeding the shrimplets? Shrimplet death rates are usually attributed to water parameters and availability of food. You could improve survival rates by transferring the berried mama into a breeding net until the shrimplets hatch. Remove the adult after they hatch and raise the shrimplets in the breeding net for a few weeks. You can make sure the shrimplets get sufficient food before releasing them into the main tank.

My water temperature is stable at 72-74F (22-23C). I feed them powder food and bacteria like bacter AE. I was thinking about moving them to breeding net that might be good idea. My first issue was that  right after they release the babies they tend to molt right away and get berried again so if i keep them in nets they might not get berried again. The tank is in my office so i dont get to see them over weekend. My first berried OERD held her egg for over 35 days to the point where she molted and some eggs was still attach to molt. I will order a breeding net and see if that help. Thanks!

My tank is 60P(16~gallon). Here link i kept Blue dream with the red devil but probably move them out later. The blue dream in cardinia parameter is doing amazing to. I have about 6-7 berried blue dreams at the moment.

I see , is the water white or it's just because of the light?

Yea it just ceiling light that making it wash out when taking picture. Also i just feed some bacter AE and shrimpfit+ so all shrimp is hiding around the sponge eating

Please ask the breeder on what water parameter the shrimp are in the tank?

How is your water change regime?
How fast is your new water added?
How do you prepare the water?
Is there is water temp difference in the new water?
