Nerite snails in Brackish water

Featured Replies

Hello,

I decided to give breeding nerite snails a shot and set up a 1 gallon brackish tank. I slowly salinated it with Reef salt to Approx 1.005 gravity. I started it with cycled shrimp and snail tank water and have it planted with duckweed and a little hornwort.

My four nerite snails have primarily Stayed out of the water or halfway out of the water line and haven’t moved too much all week.

i am worried they are not healthy in the water conditions, but unsure why.

I’ve also noticed a white cloudy layer of the water (partially undissolved salt? Or some kind of bad microbial growth/film?)

i need to check the water parameter again to see if something is off (Ammonia spike?), but I don’t know what else I might be missing.

Anyone who knows about nerites, please let me know if there are any concerns I should know about.

thanks.

Params sound okay imo, not sure if the plants will survive long but worth a try with those cheap plants. Thing on the top will probably be a layer of protein if you aren’t running a filter or skimmer (I would be blown away if you were running a skimmer on a 1 gal though ?). Really wanted to do this myself, eager to see how it turns out for you! If you can do it I might have to set up a new tank and try.

Good luck!
