Feeding Mulberry Leaves

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I've seen that people use mulberry leaves to feed their shrimp and as luck may have it.... I have a mulberry tree in my backyard!

Just wanting to know how people prepare the mulberry leaves to be used to feed their shrimp.

Is it a case of just picking them and putting it in the tank? Should I blanch the leaves before using them?

Or I've seen in another thread people dry them out in the sun before using them.

My main concern was that after picking off a fresh mulberry leaf and putting it in the water, the sap may poison the shrimp?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Dan

Hi Dan,

During autumn, a friend who has a mulberry tree, gave me s NYC of leaves he dried himself, and a bunch of fresh leaves.....I froze the fresh leaves, and when I want them, use to blanch them a little just to soften them up, and to sterilise them.... Shrimps love em....not 100% sure about the sap, but he only collected the fallen leaves..

Thanks for your feedback Bluebolts! I may setup a small tank to test out freshly picked leaves but for the time being will use the fallen ones.

Thanks

Dan

I find with fresh leaves they take a while to break down before the shrimp will touch then. But I usually just freeze them first or just blanch them in hot water first then they Munch them straight away.

Yeah I just blanch in the microwave tad but of water and yeah as soon as they hit the water the shrimp attack them

Good to know guys thanks and as luck would have it I just planted a Mulberry tree, so Mulberry pie and leaves for the shrimp.

I guess they would eat the Mulberry to, if there is any I don't eat LOL.
