Shrimp ID Request

Featured Replies

These were sold to me as being Sunkist Shrimp.  I'm totally new to the hobby and forgot to verify the scientific name.  I called the store back a few days later and was told by a different employee they are Caridina Cantonensis.  Does that seem correct based on the photo?  I'd sure like to verify so that I can learn more about their requirements.

I don't think that's right.

They certainly look like "Sunkists", which means they are Cherry shrimp.

Cherry shrimp being the common name and Sunkist being the colour variation.

Cherry shrimp go by the scientific name of  Neocaridina davidi.

Caridina Cantonensis is the old scientific name for Crystal shrimps, like Crystal Red or Crystal Black. They are now known as Caridina logemanni.

Thank you for helping with the identification JayC.  Since I was told it was a Sunkist when I purchased it I initially thought it might be this: https://fishkeeper.co.uk/databank/marine/miscellaneous/orange-sunkist-shrimp but it also resembles an orange colored cherry shrimp like you're suggesting.

The chart that NoGi is working on is very nicely done.  This aspect of the hobby must get rather confusing.
