Haven't been back for a long time

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Haven't been around these parts in ages since I let my shrimp tanks go. But I'm in the process of getting a new tank built and installed (1220x860x800) - which amazingly I discovered, holds more water than my old 6x2x2.

Anyhoo, this'll be a discus display tank that I'll likely start stocking in late January and I'm really keen to find if there's any shrimp that can handle constant water temps of 29 degrees that won't also try to eat the discus mucus. It'll be heavily planted and have lots of caves and holes for the shrimp to hide, so snacking by the discus should be minimal. Are there any shrimp that can handle discus type water conditions?

Thanks.

I have RCS, DAS and DRN shrimps with my discus at 28-30 degrees with no issues. The tank has been running for almost 2 years now.

The discus leave all the shrimps alone but the blue rams love to hunt down RCS. They leave the DAS and DRN alone.

Sounds like a nice discus display tank. Would be keen to see some pics! :)

jc, you've made my day!

I love Cherries, would be great to be able to put them into this new tank. I'm assuming all Cherry types would be ok regardless of colour, eg Yellow Cherry's?

Have never kept DAS or DRN but I have had Chameleon / Ninjas before and loved them. Am assuming they have similar care requirements. I think +/-29 degrees is too hot for Chameleons (or am I wrong?) but just looked up the DAS and DRN and they look great too. Are they hard to get hold off, is there anyone here on SKF that sells them and are they expensive? (Yeah - I should do more research of SKF before asking these kinds of questions.)

Thanks heaps for your reply. I'll definitely put up some photos of the tank preparation, installation and stocking process.

I have a Red Cherries colony thriving in my discus tank. Also have Caridinas and Paratya in the same tank.

It's a 240l, hosting 4 discus 12 cms wide, 2 Synodontis and a gang of 12 rummy noses and 12 tetra néons, 4 Planchax, and several corydoras.
There's a nice driftwood inside, numerous plants, and Riccia fluitans for hidding fry and shrimplets.

This setup is working for more than a year now, and I still see the shrimps inside. I believe some shrimplets are being snacked by the fish, but my discus do not worry about the shrimps.

Thanks for this, Matuva. Much appreciated.
