Looking for gift advice.

Featured Replies

Hey there.  I hope this is the right section to post this in.

I was wondering if any of you guys who keep shrimps have any kind of gift ideas. My step-father started collection shrimps maybe a year ago now and kept tropical fish before that. It's his main hobby. This year for his birthday/christmas I was looking to get him a gift that wasn't the usual stuff.

Are there any kind of must-have books for shrimp keepers out there or just anything at all? I know practically nothing on the topic and this forum was at the top of my google search.

Any advice is massively appreciated.

It depends on what he already has.

A nice quality TDS meter.

A pH meter with calibration fluids.

A nice 3D shrimp net.

A Reverse Osmosis kit.

Another small 20L rimless tank.

Ziss EZ breeder box.

New LED light.

Some exotic shrimp food.

What is his setup like? - Individual tanks? Rack of tanks with sump?

I'm not sure honestly, he has a shed full of tanks.

Are there any kind of books that are really handy to have?

There aren't many books on ornamental shrimps that I know of.

But there is a magazine called Breeders 'n' Keepers. Shrimp related articles and lots of pretty pictures. But not sure where you can buy that in the UK.

Ask if he already has a TDS meter.

That would be a tool that most fish converted to shrimp keepers will be lacking.

It's one of the most useful tools for an aquarist (fish or shrimp).

Other than that, if he already has a shed full of tanks, he is likely to have everything already.

Expect more tanks. Or more shrimps.

How long do you have before his birthday?

You should be able to get breeders n keepers magazine volume 2 and 3 (1 is rare now) from ebay and/or Amazon fairly affordably.

They are great magazines with nice pictures and some great articles from top breeders. Also expedition journals to see shrimp in their native habitats.

I learnt a lot from reading these mags.

Just an idea, what about getting a nice little package of different foods, alder cone, IAL, powders, caves, I'd be pretty impressed if my step lad gave me that.

A hamper of shrimp goodies !

You're not alone BTW

Try to get a better idea of what he has already.  For most people, a cheaper but actually desired item will beat out a bucket full of expensive things they'd never use.  It's also a lot more impressive because it meant you took the time and effort to figure out what he might need or want.

(That you're here to ask is great, by the way.)
