Heard back from an aquarium store in Adelaide, am going to go ahead and get the Aqua One Aquanano 40, it's on special also, just need to shrimp proof the in take now, any ideas peeps? I was thinking a thin filter sponge over the in take, but not too pleasing on the eye though is it.

OK, after some opinions, I can get an Aqua One Aquanano 40 from Adelaide, just not 100% sold on the filtration of the system though as I swear by canisters, do I run with this system or go with a tank and add a canister? This tank will be only planted with say around 50 at most shrimp, so not much of a load in there, Aquanano 40 is 55 litres.

Just curious... but if you don't really like the filtration system, you were thinking of replacing the light, and you'll need to adjust the intake to be baby-shrimp safe.... why get a pre-packaged all-in-one system?

The built in filtration system is going to be much better than an air driven sponge filter, and will be suitable for shrimps. You don't need a canister filter. 

I only suggested a canister filter for a tank without a built in.

+1 to what Kaylenna said. If you are only going to grow mosses, don't change the lights.

Was planning to have Anubias, Bolbitis and Mosses in the tank, no other plant life other than that.

Went outta town today and sussed out a Aqua One Horizon 65, only thing is I didn't want the stand and wasnt keen on the hang on back filter either, he wouldn't sell without the stand.

Yeah true, but just not too sure of what to go with at the moment.

Really like the all in one system, small, built in at the back, decently priced, just undecided, don't want to throw cash at something then change my mind.

Plus, I've really taken a liking to nano tanks as well, not too keen on larger tanks no more, haha.

What are people's thoughts on Kaldnes K1 Media? Asking because I came across it while looking at some shrimp foods on Boss Aquaria and thought that if it's any good I'll order some at the same time as the foods.

Not really appropriate for a small filter system. They need to be moving all the time as in a sump system to work to their full potential as they are designed to rub against each other and bump off old bacteria. For the greatest surface area you are better off with a noodle type ceramic media. Lots of conflicting info on them as to which ones are best and a lot of price difference to go with that. In my opinion, and free advice is worth just that, just look for one that is pourous to the eye not really tight, if that makes sense.

Wouldn't believe it, went down to the local fish store this morning to sell off some Blind Cave Tetras that belonged to the old duck, they were getting too big for her little tank and she decided she wanted some Bettas instead, while down there I found a Ocean Free Nano Space 34l, $198 down to $80 due to it being a ex display tank, one of the glass legs was also disattached and sitting there, I thought to myself this is pretty much the same tank as the Aqua One Aquanano 40, except slightly smaller, asked if I could have it, they said no worries, gave me an extra $10 off due to the broken leg, so ended up paying $70 for a $198 tank which I'll turn into a shrimp nano.

Got 1 male Betta and 2 females plus 2 lots of Betta foods in a swap deal for the 7 Blind Cave Tetras, which is cool also.

Have set up the Mr Aqua 12g Bookshelf, given it a good clean, filter is running, still have the old media in there and some water, lazy I know, but that's all running again, have the 3 Bettas in the bag sitting in the water in the tank as well.

Once I have that all up and running for her, I'll look into making the OF Nano Shrimp safe, get some more media and put a small heater in the back section.

LED is 5.2w, yeah not enough I know but surely enough for Anubias, Bolbitis and Moss right? Powerhead is 480lph, had a play with it earlier and you can turn the flow up and down, so that has enough flow, thinking I'll get a SS mesh piece and fit in the back section to stop juvi Shrimp from getting through the intake slits, will also put some Frogbit in the back section also to get with water quality.

What do you think? Did well? Any advice?

I think you did bloody well. Led should be fine for what you want. Are you planning to put the mesh at the intake or before the pump section?

Yeah thinking I'll put the mesh on the inside of the back sump section, that way no juvi shimp can get through and it isn't an eye sore to look at, seeing it's in the back of the intake slits.

Will take my time setting it up though, just get bits and pieces as I go, not all at once and in a rush like I have in the past.

Change in plans, have gone back to the Mr Aqua 12g.

Ordered a BioPro 90cm LED this morning, bought 2 x 2kg Fluval Shrimp Stratum bags, I don't think it's quite enough so will add a little aquarium gravel first then cover with the stratum, ordered 3 x Anubias nana on driftwood, 1 x Bolbitis heudelotii, see what that all looks like and go from there.

Well 3 x Anubias nana on driftwood received this morning in the mail, all in excellent condition, some nice pieces, just waiting on a piece of Bolbitis heaudelotii, should have that tomorrow.

Heater added, set to 24c, filter loaded up with new and old filter media and set up, threw the old BeamsWork 90cm LED on, it's on it's last legs, just waiting on the BioPro 90cm LED to rock up, but doing the job until then.

Looking a little bare at the moment, the Anubias nana leaves are compressed down from being squashed in the mail, but should be fine and spring to life after a couple days, thinking maybe 2 more pieces of Anubias on driftwood, see what it looks like once the Bolbitis goes in though.
