Alder tree

Featured Replies

hi all anyone know where I can get a alder tree from ? I have come across what they call Toorak ‘Gum Tree’ I'm just not sure if it's the right one or not ? I could just buy seeds online from overseas but again no guarantee they would be allowed in

Is an Alnus jorullensis. It's certainly a type of Alder. But just remember, they can grow to be a fairly big tree.

If you want the tree for it's catkins (cones), then buying a massive tree for a few cones seems like an extreme way of doing it. A $10 bag (40 cones) would last you ages, since the Alder catkin cones are woody and don't disintegrate and will last a long time in a tank.

Then of course, there is the growth time before the tree will produce catkins. That could take you years.

Or you can get a $20 bag of 100 cones, if you need more.

Yeah your right never thought about the years it takes buying is cheap too.

LOL !

Sometimes you need the voice of reason to smack you in the back of the head.

You could also keep an eye out for the trees in the neighborhoods you frequent.  For example, there are 2 trees within 3 blocks of my house and my son's school.  I haven't bothered looking more since those will supply more than I need easily.  Every time I've stopped to pick some, I get about 60 just from what's fallen after recent rains/winds.  Just be sure to clean them so you don't put dog/bird poo etc in your tanks!
