Plant Identification

Featured Replies

I have found this plant, at least I think it's a plant, growing amongst my floating frogbit, and entangled in the upper parts of my Rotala.

Sorry about the picture, I don't have a DSLR with a macro, had to rely on my HTC camera.

This stuff is a very fine filament thread, with tiny leaves spaced along it's length and grows amongst the floating plants, tangling itself amongst their roots. I also find it occasionally tangled amongst my Rotala. Anyone have any ideas?

It's a type of bladderwort: the little hollow vessels/ bulbous structures are carnivorous traps that feed on small organisms. That weed grows like wildfire and will strangle water plants quite quickly. I received mine with some moss from a shrimper about a year ago and I had to actively hunt those filaments down in my tanks.

Keen shrimp is correct, its a species of Utricularia, probably U. Gibba.

If the previous posts were not obvious enough,  get rid of it ASAP.

Yep thats bladderwort. I keep it in shrimp only tanks to consume water fleas and other tiny things. It floats well so in low current it doesn't get mixed in with my other plants.
