What is this night-green shrimp???

Featured Replies

Hello! I was wondering whether someone might be able to help me ID this shrimp, which I found near Lilydale Lake, just northeast of Melbourne. I usually only find the translucent glass shrimp, and the occasional red cherry shrimp that someone must have released from their aquarium. But on this evening I found a large night-green shrimp, which was 5-6cm long, much bigger than any of the female glass shrimp nearby.  She was pretty majestic, so I just took a few pictures and left her be. But what is she??? Those are tea tree leaves below her.

Very nice. @fishmosy would know.

Thanks so much NoGi! I'll give them a message. Cheers

Have replied in PM but give a shortened version here for everyone else - it's likely Paratya australiensis or Caridina indistincta. Closer examination (with microscope) would be needed to confirm.

Thanks for your expertise fishmosy. Here are two more images of the shrimp from different angles. They probably still aren't clear enough, but who knows, someone might be able to make out something. Cheers

Given the tapered tail spines and the presence of 'something' behind the eyes in these photos I'm going to stick with Paratya.
