Red Moss

Featured Replies

I have recently got a bit of red moss from someone (it's not actually a moss, but an algae, hence why I'm posting here) and I'm just wondering the best conditions to put it into. I have a CO2 tank, but seeing it's an algae I'm unsure if that will discourage it from growing as most algae seems to dislike CO2. Any tips?

I've seen it growing in local creeks, not really sure what requirements are. I left it as it felt gross ;)

I had it for awhile before I accidentally killed it by dosing glut (the carbon source in Excel). Anyway it did well in a tank with moderate hardness (250 ppm) but didn't do well in a tank with low TDS (120). I guess this is not surprising as I think it comes from brackish water in its natural habitat. CO2 apparently helps but mine grew fine without it.

That's bad news for me as my water is suuuuuuupper soft. The joys of having a concrete water tank. And that's good news re the CO2. Also, when you say "didn't do well" what do you mean? Are you talking about stunted growth, no growth or death? Just seems like I'll have issues in the TDS area and am wanting a heads-up on the amount of damage I'll be in for. Thanks, @fishmosy!
