Are my shrimps the ones they sold me?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

A few months ago I was considering to add some shrimps to my fishtank and some research on the internet got me looking for caridina japonica aka amano shrimp.

I added 3 of them to my 15gal/54l tank and I quickly noticed how useful  and fun they are in my tank. Some time later added another 4 of them, and later I added 3 more because I find them a great addition to my tank. All the shrimp come from the same petstore.

After I added 7 more shrimp to my tank I noticed the first 3 shrimp I introduced in my tank are different in color, size and behaviour. One of them is black/dark brown, one brown and one dark red, they are smaller and more timid when compared to the other 7. They are all the same (grey/transparent) color and not shy at all, especially when there is food to claim.

I would love to know if they really are all the same breed.

First photo is too difficult to tell, the shrimp is too far away.

2nd photo looks like an Amano shrimp to me.

3rd photo looks like a Caridina Typus, possibly. Not sure. Do you get C. Typus in your country?

thanks for the fast reply :)

Yes the second one looks like an Amano indeed

the first and last photo is the same shrimp, I don't know if Caridina Typus is available here, as the shop where I bought them only have Amano shrimp. I googled the Typus and it looks very similar to the ones I have. I actually like having them in my tank and can learn more about them thanks!
