Power outage

great news for me next Tuesday its going to be 36  and we are having a power outage from 8 am to 3 pm. Luckily we have an inverter and battery system for our caravan so hubby is going to bring 4 batteries in for me to hook up my pumps and canisters, unfortunately I doubt it will run the chiller for my big tank so I will be putting the fans back on to that tank . The shrimp room tanks will just have to cope with being warm for a few hours but they shouldn't go up too quickly if I leave the room closed.

I wanted to find out if I switch my chiller off can the canister that is attached to it still be used. Does the water just go through the chiller  or does it close off when it isn't on?  I don't want to disconnect the canister unnecessarily but can if I have to.

I am trying to understand why is this great news or is this your attempt at sarcasm? Haha.

Yes the chiller can be switched off and the canister filter will still run fine. Good luck and hope all the shrimps enjoy a bit of 'season' change for them. :)

Definitely sarcasm!

Thanks for that I thought that was the case but wasn't 100% sure.

Good luck! Sounds like your prepared and have it all sorted!

Thanks Buck we are going to give it a trial run tomorrow. I wouldn't normally be too worried but with the heat the tanks need the air movement . At worst the canisters could just be partially cleaned and the water in them flushed out but we are having another mini heat wave with weather between 36 & 39 over the next 5 days - not a great time to be without power.

Wish you all the Best. I had a 14 hour power outage and everything went well. I think you should be fine.

Not overly worried Disciple but it's best to use what we have available so I don't kill the bacteria in the canisters - they are my main concern. The power might not even be off for the full 7 hours.

We are running it at the moment using 2 canisters and 3 pumps and it's all chugging along nicely. It should last at least 4 hours but probably much longer. I haven't worked out how much each item uses but we have run the lights , TV, hard drive , computer  - all the important things in life LOL - for over a week when out camping and have never had the batteries go flat. They are big heavy duty ones  and could probably run the chiller if really necessary!

themain reason for the thread was just to find out about turning off the chiller.

Well we survived 5 hours without power and a temperature of 36.5, we even managed to have a fan on for us and the battery system was still almost fully charged. We used a bank of 3 deep cycle batteries with the inverter.

On a different matter I very nearly cooked my shrimp room last night! I went in to make the room a bit cooler in readiness for today thinking if I got the tanks down to 20 they would stand a better chance of staying cool longer. Somehow I must have hit the menu button instead of the decrease button ,pressed it once which takes it to heating instead of cooling and walked out of the room. About 10 minutes later I walked past the room and felt hot air coming out from under the door so quickly went in to sort it out. It was only set to 24 so wouldn't have done a great deal of harm but still I'm very glad I found out before it was on heating all night.

Arf, very lucky with the heater on in the room!
