Inverts and molluscs in WA

Featured Replies

I exchanged a few emails with different parts of the government lately, to finally get an answer to the rumors of yes or no the inverts are (still) banned. Here's a copy of the email I received today. If you have questions, pass them on I can add them to a reply.

Thanks for your email.

Unless the shrimp species occurs naturally in WA, they are not allowed into WA.

Non-endemic freshwater shrimp are a biosecurity concern to native species of shrimp, such as the native glass shrimp Palaemonetes australis.

Caridina indistinctica, commonly known as the indistinct river shrimp, is a species endemic to QLD that has been found in south west WA and has potential to compete with our native glass shrimp (please see attached brochure).

Also, the exotic cherry shrimp Neocaridina heteropoda – a species native to China and Taiwan and common in the aquarium trade, are also a threat to the native species here, and we have also found that the eastern state native – the indistinct river shrimp, has established here, possibly as a result of the aquarium trade.

Let me know if you have any further queries.

Cheers,

Well I found that my glass shrimp have turned red while I was overseas. Strange, but I'm happy I can see them now

I was hearing rumours that the ban was lifted, apparently not.
