Contemplating buying an RO unit instead of buying my RO from LFS. I pay quite a bit for water so I'm hoping to put the wastewater to some good use. Wondering what members here do with the wastewater from RO units?

i feed mine directly into the washing machine and it seems to work fine. prior to that i was using it to water tough (non-potted) plants

ps if u get one of the portable units from FSA they can provide whichever tap adaptor/fitting u need to run the unit where u like. my washing machine is outside and i have a fitting to plug it into the standard outdoor tap screw thingy

Water the plants, wash the car, washing machine ... anything really expect straight down the sink. It just feels like a waste if you put the waste water down the sink.

The only thing I would not do is drink it.

I have put on an extended amount of tubing and my water goes directly on to the lawn in my back yard. I put the tubing into the end of a garden hose so I can get to all the lawn area - it's not a large lawn but this keeps it green all year. If we haven't had rain for a while I will still use a sprinkler occasionally as I'm not sure if the concentrated waste water would do harm but so far I have been using this method for 2 1/2 years and the lawn is great.. I also use the waste water from my tanks on all my pot plants and to top up my little pond with a cherry colony in it. No wasted water at all this way!

Do you run the RO unit at the same time you do a load of laundry? Or do you store the wastewater and then feed it into the washing machine?

i just let the drain line hang into a bucket when using the machine. Though one time i messed up and accidentally ran waste water into a clean load of washing that was still in the machine. ;-)

Woops.

I think I'll do something like this. I don't think my garden needs any more water.
