I wonder if anyone use mangrove as a way to control ammonia/nitrites level like me? I found it very effective as I only have a cheap slim nano HOB filter and LED light for my tank. My plants grow relatively well without the CO2 as well fertilizer. What about yours? I’d love to learn more about what you have for low tech tanks like me.

Yeah I suspected this was the case that it is algae growing on them but I didn't want to assume anything

Uh yeah ... that would be it. That's why it wasn't harming the shrimp.

My lighting is definitely on the intense side I was running the lights 24/7 for a couple months to promote breeding which worked really well, but I suspect it is algae growing on them because of the lighting regime. For the last week or so ive been doing 12 hours on 12 hours off but I might reduce to 6 hours of lighting and see if what is growing on them clears up. Hopefully with reduced lighting it will clear up in the near future. The input is appreciated thank you to everyone who commented

My setups are about as lowtech and simple as you can get! I have 3 tanks, 25L with a male betta & cull shrimp (from main tank), 30L with about 10 mosquito Rasbora and cull shrimp (from main tank), and 30L main tank with Red cherry shrimps with ember tetra and neon tetra. All tanks have aquasoil with plants and wood, and just have cheap/simple sponge filters (not HOB) with spray bar, and a heater and lights. Thats it. Plants do very well, though I probably don't have anything that is exotic or highly demanding. I am forever giving away plants or discarding them..........

It could be a form of fungus. There are sooooo many varieties of fungus, not all of them are detrimental. You could try a fungal medication, but I would dose at half the recommended rate that the bottle specifies. A 5 minute salt bath could be worth trying as well. This could also be an algae. How bright does that tank get? Try adding some floating plants or reduce the light duration to 6 hours. Definitely keep us in the loop whatever you try. I would love to get to the bottom of this.

That is definitely hydra! If you have planaria as well you will want a product that kills both so the SL Aqua may not be what you want. There are various treatments available on ebay, as mentioned by JayC above.

Yes. this is a hydra. Yeah, this is an old thread. The website is probably out of business. Google "SL Aqua Z1 Planarian & Hydra Cleaner", or "planaria zero" or "no planaria" and just look for the most convenient site to purchase from.

Definitely was not around. We had to break new ground with hiding a treatment back in those days. Probably more a precaution, but I need to add this advice ... make sure you do a water change after the treatment period. If you are regular with water changes, than that is not a problem. Depending on how many planaria or hydra you have in the tank, their deaths can really spike ammonia and cause issues. So a water change after the treatment period is always advisable.
