Update: yesterday I found my second shrimp berried! Also I noticed I actually have a 3rd female that has matured. On top of that I found an 8th shrimp in my tank which is only 5mm, he must of been microscopic when I have received him a month ago ? I have stopped doing water changes for the time being to try to keep all parameters the same, the TDS is still around 190 and nitrates stay at 0ppm because I have so many plants. Does anyone know the name of the new grass leaf looking plant I have acquired in the back of my tank? I am starting to understand the different stages of the shrimp as they grow, my third female should be come berried in a week because she has developed the “sack belly” I will try to get better quality images with my dslr soon to come

Thats great news and you can assume there are some you didn't see that may be hiding somewhere. It is great when they come out more and you get to see them more! Simon

Update: One batch of babies is two weeks old and the other is 1 week. The most I counted today is 20. Only a few of the babies are grazing around but most of them are still stationary.

Love when someone posts on a topic as I’m reading it ? Yeah I wouldn’t risk it, as long as the shrimp are slowly recovering. Keep it in mind as a last resort, maybe, if they get worse again.

Yeah, it's definitely a quarantine tank usage ONLY. Don't use it in the main tank.

Hello, I’ve recently decided to pivot my Neocaridina aquarium to supporting crystal or bee shrimp; even if it means the neos will be evicted if things don’t go well for them. I don’t want to pay a lot for substrate, nor do I want to do a substrate change or just dump a lot of new substrate in. I do realize I need an active substrate to maintain tank stability as I continue lowering the KH for the bees/crystals. I recently set up a shrimp-safe canister filter to keep the water clean enough for bees/crystals. I had a clever idea. I was going to purchase Akadama and put a significant amount as a substrate at the end of my filter media stack. This way all filtered water will run through the active substrate and hopefully have it’s desired effect on the water conditions. Has anybody heard of putting active substrate in the filtering media?

Update: February 25: Water Temp 70-72 PH: 7.8 now.. not sure how it went from 7.6 to 7.8 after adding mopani drift wood? Ammonia: 0!!!!! Nitrite: 0!!!! NitrAte: 10-20 ( I think 10) My shrimp molted for the first time since getting them! I have been adding fluval cycle (half dose) every 2 days. And been doing a 10% water chang every few days as well. Do i know my tank is done cycling when ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate is all 0? Thanks!

Great photo! I have hundreds like that in my oldest tank, I have already culled 100 and am still over-run! I assume it is a reverting to wild shrimp? I wouldn't think it is just not coloured after a new molt as it does have some colour, albeit brown! See what happens colour wise in a few days? I would fish it out and put it in an old ice cream plastic tub (or similar) for a few days with a few bits of weed etc, or a breeding box in the tank if you have one, and see what happens to its colour? I expect it will bee a cull, or it is a native that came in with some of your foraged stuff? Simon

I found a 9th shrimp!? Should I cull him right away or could he look like that right after molt? He’s maybe 1-1.5cm long.

It looks great but may be a bit high maintenance long term? Disturbing the soil will release stuff that the shrimp will like to eat and you may find they zoom in to that area! You will need to be careful when taking stuff from waterways that there are no bugs hitching a ride? Simon

I got mine from a spring locally. I cut the top at a 45 degree angle. It seems to be doing well so far, but I have to plant it deep in my soil which gets my water fairly dirty though

I think you are right, I have had a look around on internet, some people sell that??? How are you going to keep that in check as it can grow very big? Simon

at 1:00 you can see it pretty clearly do you think it could be a Jungle Val variant?
  14. sdlTBfanUK
I've not seen one like that myself??? This may be similar so it could be a variant but it may not be an aquarium known type being as big as you say, https://www.pro-shrimp.co.uk/tropica-1-2-grow/1515-tropica-helanthium-quadricostatus-1-2-grow-5703249868022.html Simon

I’ve trimmed a lot of the infected plants but it’s coming back gradually, I’m not too worried about it as long as it doesn’t cover 100% of my tank. Here is the picture of the plant, about an inch wide per stem grows to about 3-4 feet. Got it from a nearby spring ?

I think it's a personal choice. Choose which ever looks good in your tank.

Thanks Jay C. Oh yeah. That would be bad. Do people use pure Akadama medium, or do I need an Akadama soil blend? I was thinking of moderately sprinkling it over the current substrate. It seems cheaper than some of the premium active substrates, which probably have similar raw ingredients. I won’t drop the creativity. We’ll see what I come up with.

I’m holding some right now, the friend had some. I told him I would consult my resident shrimp experts first. I don’t know that I want to try it. Shrimp are doing great, and I have been feeding oregano infused foods, every other day, for weeks now. All shrimp are getting some. I’m not sure I want to add more treatment to the mix, just because. Also, I don’t want to kill my filter bacteria too, that would be a whole new set of problems.... I think I’ll pass, it just isn’t worth murdering my biofilter, and adding more to the tank.

I have considered it once. The problem is, how do you keep the substrate from floating into the pump impeller, cause that will destroy the pump. The pressure of the water flow will no doubt push some grains into the impeller. I thought of putting it in a filter bag, but that restricts flow significantly. You can reduce the amount used in the filter bag, but then it's not enough to make a significant impact. So I decided against that idea. But you might be able to figure something out.

It might work. Amoxicillin kills a wide range of bacteria (also beneficial bacteria), so it might work. Only way is to try it. Can you get Fishmox easily, I know it's not easy for me to get any here. It will treat issues externally. The problem with it though, is that Chitinlytic disease is as much internal as it is external. So you got to get the shrimp to eat some of that amoxicillin.
