LOL. Did you read the article properly?? Under the Disclaimer - who is the author? The info I give you is much more up to date than these other sites who have taken a snapshot of the evolving field of treatment for shrimp diseases. I warned those websites, that they need to ensure they maintain the content, as I keep updating the Disease & Diagnostics post. But alas, they copy it once and never remember to return to update it. So our own Disease and Diagnostics post is the source and is actively maintained by me. Carvacrol (aka Oregano oil) will treat bacteria of various types. Chitinolytic disease is just another form of bacteria. Oregano oil when added to food will treat bacteria internally. Oregano oil added to the water will treat bacteria externally, like on the shell/carapace, like in the case of Chitinolytic disease. But take caution with filter bacteria, as with any treatment for bacteria will also impact beneficial filter bacteria. You might want to remove half the media and keep in another tank, just in case. If you can get fresh Oregano leaves, add them into the tank and see if the shrimp will eat it. The Levamisole will work on external bacteria only. It would be very hard getting the shrimp to eat it to treat internal bacteria infections.

That's what I do when I use rubber (nitrile) gloves. Man, substrate makes a huge difference. Set another tank up beside it with JBL as a test. We are here to help people, so an experiment like this will be very useful. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on which way you look at it, we don't get Shrimp King substrate here. So I have no experience with it to say if it is good or not.

Mark's Shrimp Tanks didn't like the Shrimp King substrate either, btw. Some gloves have powder residue on the outside, so I don't recommend using them. What parameters did you test? I can only think of two possibilities: 1) Substrate is leeching something bad into the water. How many water changes have you done? Maybe time to do more to "dilute" the poison out. 2) Bacterial environment is not right - maybe wastes not getting converted over into nitrates for the plants?

Sorry to hear that. I didn't want to jump to conclusions until I saw a higher res picture. But ... red under the shell of shrimps could indicate an internal infection. And the shrimps might be fighting a disease in the tank, or high ammonia levels. Since this is a mature tank and you say your ammonia levels are zero, it might mean they have a bacterial infection. I can't be 100% sure of course being no where near the tank. If it is a bacterial infection, try treating with Carvacrol (Oregano oil), you can read about it in the Disease and Diagnostics thread.

This really isn't going well this time. I am not really sure why either? The plants are nowhere as green and lush as the other tanks and the shrimps seem to be dying off slowly despite all parameters being perfect! The different substrate must be part of this but as it is shrimpking I can't believe it can be the main problem! After a lot of considering the only thing I can come up with is I tend to do this tank the same day as I do washing so I 'MAY' be contaminating the water if I have some washing product residue on my hands but this is really clutching at straws - it is the only thing I can come up with and a possibility............... I have left a note next to the tank to remind me for the future! I am thinking of changing 50% of the water and 1 of the 2 sponges at the weekend and running the tank for a few weeks then trying One last time a new batch of taiwan bee shrimps, and at least they will be in situ by the end of our winter so they should readily breed this lot? I probably have just under 10 shrimps left. Any advice appreciated on what they would do? I have a few days to mull it all over? Simon

Another mother-bleeping dead adult. I have no idea what’s going on. You’d think all these micro sized babies would be dying too.... I don’t get it.
