Your initial impression that Tigers are Cantonesis might be because they were all classed under this name a long time ago. Recently, (I say recent, but it has actually been 5+ years now), evidence has shown that Tigers are a different sub species and therefore given a new scientific name of Caridina Mariae. I'll try to give you an simple explanation. Fancy tigers are hybrids. The term "fancy" is just given as a name to indicate that the Tiger has been breed with another species to produce a different pattern. It started with crossing Crystal Red Shrimps(CRS) and Orange Eye Blue Tiger(OEBT). And has now evolved to crossing with a Taiwan bee to produce a splotchy pattern. You can get a variety of colour like Red, or Black Fancy tigers being the most common. They are still essentially Tibees. But they have a distinct splotchy pattern. You still get the distinct tiger stripes but they are a lot fancier in colouring. Compare this to the original tiger shrimp Caridina Mariae below ... This one below is of an extremely high quality Fancy Tiger. Full colouration, no clear spots. The lines between red and white are clean and crisp, no blending of colours. The red and white colours are rich and intense. Legs are also coloured in red and not clear. This one is almost certainly a PRL cross Tiger. Blue Tigers are a bit easier to explain. Royal Blue is a colour variation name. It's just a name to distinguish it from the normal Blue tiger. Blue Tigers are ... blue with the trademark tiger stripes. Royal Blue as an extremely dark blue colouration, the stripes almost disappear in the intense dark blue. Pictures speak a thousand words ... "Normal" Blue tiger. VS Royal Blue Anytime you hear of a term added before the name of the shrimp, its usually a colour variation. Hope that helps.

Hi! I just bought some Bloody Mary shrimp two weeks ago for a new 10 gallon tank! I hope to learn a lot about aquascaping and shrimping!

Photo of a 5cent coin sized females 'flushing/cleaning/breathing' her eggs. Can really only see her abdomen open from this angle. Have a video. Just need to make it smaller file size. In a few days. Closing down another tank with about 100 female crabs in it tonight. Eager for summer new breeding rack city setup.

The short answer is no, they are not worth it. Any shrimp specific food as long as it's not fish food. But soon you will gravitate to fresh foods like leaves, vegetables, even fruits and flowers. Don't forget to add some protein in their diet like frozen blood worms. I even make my own foods now. Which I shared the recipe in the Food & Nutrition forum - I call it SKF (Shrimp Kandy Feast).

Welcome Linty. Your tank looks great! My guess is that in grading these, they kept a high female ratio as they have the most pigment usually. But these aren't too young and if one was even bred the day you got them, could become berried in time. And that 3rd shrimp from bottom looks *possibly* male to me, but wouldn't bet my paycheck on it. In fact, your lighter ones are the highest probability to be males. Give them some time, hard to buy 10 adults and get all unbred females. I bet you see berries soon.

Hmmmmm, I like that. So basically, you mix a remineralization concentrate, and find out the ratio to water volume you’re mixing. Nice! Tried that. It was over, and because I’m insanely neurotic, that doesn’t work for me. Lol.

LOL HAHA, yeah, I hope not. But I do love to give hell to new members sometimes. Dosing chart? No. But here is another pro tip you won't get anywhere else ... Get an empty 500ml water bottle, and premix the Salty shrimp in it. Add 400ml of RO water and dilute approx 100gm of SS into it (or as much as you can fit without overflow). Then you just need to drip the SS liquid each time. You count the number of drops the first time to get to your desired TDS level, then you just need to repeat the number of drops for every other water change.

Poop. I also use a TDS pen, and the conversion is like (1) level scoop to 10 liters of water. Works out to something like (1) scoop per 2.6 gallons or some crap. I’m just trying to find out how much to add to every 5 gallons of RO/DI I make, but haven’t nailed it down yet.

I have maybe three that have the racing stripe, and two which are not very pigmented. By Flip Aquatic definition, they have the red flesh and transparent outer shell. I just find that some are more pink or transparent than red

You were very unlucky to get all one sex if you got 10, though if you can get hold of a male you should get an explosion in numbers so worth keeping an eye out for a male, you only need 1 after all! The ones at the front look like bloody mary to me but as you say some may be lower grade? They look very settled and healthy if you only got them a few weeks ago! Simon
  12. Steensj2004
Oh, and another question. Does anyone have a better bleeping dosing chart for Salty Shrimp (both kinda). Because as of now, I haven’t figured it out. I have to add a little, test, add a bit more, and test again. Otherwise, I overshoot and have to dilute, it’s a total PITA.

Thank you so much! It's my first tank. I have ten shrimp that I bought from a local fish store. They claim they're bloody Mary, but I suspect they are lower grade. They're also all female somehow, so I guess ten is all I'll have. LOL

Its more a bark wood tied with moss, tried many moss, this one is slow growing and has looks nice since I used it, two temperature controller with a water cooler, one it the main cooler, the other is a backup, one is set to 25, the other is set to 27, and a individual thermometer, other wires is at the back of the tank connected to the DIY cooler, I forget to add a background PVC film like the old tank.

Awesome!! You guys have been more hell that I could have asked for. see multiple molts this AM, everyone looking healthy and scavenging around! Have all 5 shrimp king foods, I’ll try a mix. They do pick at things I add, but they are clearly eating because I’m watching small areas of biofilm disappear.

As I mentioned I use spinach on saturday, but they aren't interested at this point but hopefully they will be when I have more shrimps and they then need more food. This is what used to happen when I put the spinach in the tank, there are 2 baby leaves in the picture but you can't really see them as the shrimps are all over them; Any fresh food needs to be organic though! I currently do it with the bettas weekly pea. Just put spinach and pea in a cup, pour on boiling water from the kettle, then put the cup in the microwave on full for 2 minutes and hay presto................. The shrimps will eat pea but you need to de-skin the 2 soft halves so the shrimp can get to the centre. As you say, they aren't all that picky and will eat their shells and poop etc IF they are hungry enough! As for spending a lot on food, if you don't overfeed it lasts a very long time, The first 5 in 1 pack I had has lasted over a year with over 100 shrimps, most of that time (still some of it left) as the more you buy in variety it lasts longer as you're not using it every time so actually even shrimp specialised foods are really cheap in the long term I think? Wow this has just morphed into a shrimp food discussion page ?. Useful info tho! I've only seen my shrimp eating twice, but suspect they eat when the fish are sleeping or just are grazing on the biofilm and algae all the time (The 2 times r once back when it was just snails n shrimp, when I fed algae wafers, and also recently saw a shrimp eating his own poop ? was very impressed). I don't have a shrimp specific food, but have tried feeding veggies, and never seen anything but snails take that (zucchini and lettuce) any easy options? I also never see my BNs eating anything but the algae on their piece of driftwood (they love it!) and some algae wafers after the lights go out, what veggies could I try for them? (I rlly don't want to be spending much money on shrimp or bn food if not necessary)

Besides a bit difficulty on keeping the water parameters on safe levels, you guys think it would be alright keeping some ghost shrimp in here? And what amount of shrimp would not be overstocking for this tank? Sorry if my questions just seem too "straight forward sounding", I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right. Ever since getting my betta I just made sure everything is spot on when it comes to caring for pets of any kind and even starting to think the 12 gallon he's in right now isn't enough. Probably this post will soon become pointless as I go get a 5 gallon or bigger for the ghost shrimp I'm planning on buying. Sponge filter kinda looks beat up since I plan on switching the carbon after a month with Fluval ceramic rings (they're pre filter rings) and clean the sponge. It's a cartridge that can't be open so I had to modify it a little bit. And yeah, filter is really needed. (I had a question about it on a post). I ordered a sponge filter, although it arrived in 2 days the shrimp didn't make it. Now I only have some shrimp eggs left. Hopefully some of it survived.

LOL. Your tank collection is growing. Like what? Unless the shrimp is sick or in a new tank with lots of biofilm, shrimp usually don't ignore food. They will eat eventually, when they get hungry.
  20. jayc
Looks a bit small to be honest. The shrimp will physically fit, but keeping water parameters under control will be a pain in the ass. If you really want to try, 5 or 6 shrimp in there maybe. That's the type of tank I would use as a hospital tank, not as a long term solution. Heck I have external canister filters bigger than that. ? Test it out with a small population of cheap ghost shrimps.

My shrimp don’t seem to be interested in anything prepared. Why no fish food. I’m feeding Shrimp king but I’ve never heard that before. Well, a 17.1 gallon Aquamaxx is now on its way too....

Smashed up and mixed? Like, smashed and mixed like a powder? Similar to BacterAE.

Those that died was the CRS, I have 6 Red Wines now, I still get a room temp of about 30-31, my turtle water is at 30, but turtles are ok with various temp, my shrimp tank is at about 25.6 with a backup cooler if the temp goes over 27. I might just get a last batch of 20 CRS and 5 Red Wine just before I go on my holiday, and see the results when I get back on holiday, I will keep an eye on my web camera, and if the temp starts going up I will turn on the A/C, I can turn on and off my A/C with my phone anywhere.
