My shrimp like black worms more than blood worm or tubifex, but the annoying thing is that the dried worms float. I have recently bought Australian Black worm Sinking Pellets. I use this as a meaty protein supplement and have rated it as such. It is not a complete holistic shrimp food and it isn't marketed as such either. Highlights: sinks immediately relatively unadulterated product shrimp love them and feed on it immediately ( I am assuming that they love the taste as they eat at it for a while and they do not lose interest or toss it away). Shrimp taste- test panel: Tiger, CRS, TB, Natives, various Neos. the pellets are the perfect size for shrimp: a young adult shrimp is capable of holding a pellet. Low wastage. it is extremely affordable I cannot fault this product at all. Rating as a protein/meaty supplement: ?????/5 Shrimp Tails View full article

I tried the glass plates in a container as Fishmosy recommended many moons ago. That worked reasonably well but the shrimps favourite treat would be from me keeping several containers with moss in them . I leave them in the window in the laundry where they get morning sun. I leave the moss for about a week then put it into the tanks taking out the old moss to put back into the containers. The shrimp go crazy over it , to keep it neat I tie the moss onto large marine pure balls so it doesn't float all over the tank. The moss balls look decorative and serve a purpose. It might not give you as much algae as you need but it should help.

This is a bit of a serendipitous project. I've been breeding Darwin Algae Shrimp (DAS) Caridina sp. NTnilotica for a while now using salt water algae cultures to raise the larvae. I'm up to the F3 generation (since I got them from Aquagreen) and have raised a few hundred shrimp. The normal colour is the horde in the photo below (swarming on an algae wafer)...but recently I've noticed just a few berried females that are white with metallic eyes. I thought at first it might be that they have just moulted - but the saddle suggests otherwise, and tonight I isolated one that has released swimming larvae (I caught a few to try and rear) - so she has stayed white for long enough for the larvae to mature. All up I only have 3 white females and 2 males ... but hey thats enough! The males are just clear, but have the same eyes which really shine when viewed at night with a headlamp so easy to identify them among the herd. Of course I don't know if the colour (or lack of colour!) will "stick" long term in an individual shrimp or whether it can be passed on... but only one way to find out...

Standby! gotta take daughter to swimming lesson then i will edit this post. So maintain all that excitement you had when you read the topic! I assure you it wont be worth it! lol Okie Dokie heres the update. So i got my cheap $29 Kmart tank and raided my storage containers and this was what i had to work with. The amazingly best tank ever, from Kmart :P Regardless of the cost of the tank It is always enjoyable setting up a new tank. Stage 1 was adding my left over UP Aqua Shrimp Soil The came the adding of the sponge filter. Now given the height of the tank i am not overly satisfied with this filter given that the outlet is right below the lid it gives minor splash back which you may see later. I also replaced the filter media in the bottom to seachem matrix for greater surface area for the bacteria. I have hidden my Fluval Stratum 50w heater behind the sponge filter but unfortunately i dont think the damn thing works lol. Havent seen it turn on once so far. Just one of the problems i encountered lol. Also lost the suction caps to it so I am using one of my spare eheim heater holders which is slightly too big so It doesnt hold it firm just kinda sits in it. Out of sight out of mind though, The fun began filling up with no bucket! had to use a cordial holder drink thing which only meant about 20 trips back and forth lol. Tap water was used as i will use RO water once it is cycled. Heater is set to 26 (if it turns on) Something magical happened after i added water. About 20+ CRS shrimp magically appeared in my tank! Talk about instant colony! Here comes my fully setup tank! Its the best scaped tank in the world in my opinion, I started with lush invisbilitis plants along the back followed by its miniature invisi grass along the front. You might also note that my thermometer is not fully in the water. Thats because the damn suction cap dont work no more lol. Its no longer in the tank. I am thinking i might just add a bit of bolbitis sorry cant recall spelling right now. I have a light on the way from the tech den which i am looking forward to arriving. This tank is only to give me something to do since I am in the process of clearing my last big tank to save some money to put towards a rack. Its been decided we wont be able to buy a house now for another year atleast so stuck in rentals which will continually impact on having a decent setup if we have to move regularly. Atleast with this I can pull it down and put it back together quickly. With the exception of the tank and the light on order everything else i had laying around. It just doesnt all work haha. You were warned this would be the best tank journal ever!. So my plans are to add the piece of bolbitis, did have 1 piece of Cholla wood left but i cant find it in the left over removal boxes lol so that will be found one day. And when the tank cycles hopefully acquire a pair of shrimp. The filter will be replaced with a lower laying one and will have to replace the heater and thermometer for sufficiently acting ones lol

What've people found is the most enthusiastic black-beard-algae-eating native shrimp? My paratya eat it, but prefer other stuff. And I don't like them to get super hungry because they get a bit aggressive!

In daylight without the eye shine... what a beauty! I think this is the same shrimp as in the first post above. She's released the larvae and been re-fertilised or was still packing sperm from before (I think shrimp do that) and the saddle has become another batch of eggs. You can also notice she has not eaten (head and gut is clear)...hopefully not a problem. I'm assuming for now that after a shrimp moults it doesnt eat for a while until all the "eating bits" have hardened up... at least that seems logical to me. Compare to the shrimp below.(terrible photo sorry!). This one below has the clear body and white eggs also and I think that brown smudge at the back of the head is the stomach and you can see the "poo chute". If not eating I expect it would be pretty like the one above - its something I'll watch for! Nature is cool.

Sounds like you have a couple of tanks there. How many tanks do you have exactly? The best decision would be to give the shrimp a tank of their own. And by the sounds of it, keep the shrimps away from that betta. Keeping them in the breeder net and adding them into the cycled tank alone sounds like the best plan.

yeah i figure i gotta have something lol, in a couple of weeks i will try and source a pair or shrimp unknown what yet then go from there. To maintain the tank numbers i will probably try and breed them but sell excess numbers and put money aside to the rack fund. Gotta fund the shrimp dream lol.

Thanks for writing this up! I ordered some based on this review, and I'm really happy with this product too. My tigers and natives are particularly keen on it, and neos and mischlings also quite enjoy it. It's a very easy and economical way to give them protein!

LOL thanks Disciple don't think that will ever be the case but I'm sure most people are getting fed up with me on Facebook every time they show an exciting find I pipe up oh I have those in my tank! I've stopped saying it so often now but I do get quite a few interesting specimens showing up. Trouble is keeping the numbers down I just can't keep everything " interesting" . My biggest boo boo was giving away my yellow King Kong before I knew they were yellow king kong LOL . I have given away so many interesting finds I just hope the receivers have done something with them.

Thanks heaps for the welcome. I've only just got into shrimp the last couple weeks. previously (aprx 5 years ago), i kept African cichlids. I moved around a bit so the tank stayed dry. I ended up getting a smaller new tank w/ intent of getting small tetras & ended up starting w/ shrimp, (of course taking care all water/tank cycling & parameters etc were heeded before purchasing). But, still have a looooong way to go yet.. always keen to learn something new!

Firstly, welcome to SKF. The minnows and rummy might take an opportunity to nibble at the shrimp, but the amano won't so no need to worry about the amano at least. These questions are a bit more difficult to answer, as it is based on circumstances. As a general indication, any shrimp at 1cm or larger should be ok. It could take 3-4 months to get to that size. It's also difficult to predict is your minnows and rummys will leave the shrimp alone even if they are more than 1cm long. Some people have fish that never bother their shrimp. Some have fish that are real shrimp hunters. There is no guarantee that even a shrimp larger than 1cm will be safe. Fish don't swallow shrimp whole, unless it is a little shrimplet. They nibble at the legs and antenna of the shrimp until the shrimp dies. The betta is almost certainly a risk. Tetras can be a risk, and Rummys are certainly right up there, being big and bold. It can be done, but there are risks. Provide lots of hiding spots the fish can't get into. Provide lots of plants. Keep the fish regularly fed. That should help minimise some of the risks.
