This is a bit of a serendipitous project. I've been breeding Darwin Algae Shrimp (DAS) Caridina sp. NTnilotica for a while now using salt water algae cultures to raise the larvae. I'm up to the F3 generation (since I got them from Aquagreen) and have raised a few hundred shrimp. The normal colour is the horde in the photo below (swarming on an algae wafer)...but recently I've noticed just a few berried females that are white with metallic eyes. I thought at first it might be that they have just moulted - but the saddle suggests otherwise, and tonight I isolated one that has released swimming larvae (I caught a few to try and rear) - so she has stayed white for long enough for the larvae to mature. All up I only have 3 white females and 2 males ... but hey thats enough! The males are just clear, but have the same eyes which really shine when viewed at night with a headlamp so easy to identify them among the herd. Of course I don't know if the colour (or lack of colour!) will "stick" long term in an individual shrimp or whether it can be passed on... but only one way to find out...

I found this an interesting shrimp food with a surprising use. Lowkeys Japan states that shrimp are generally fed too nutritious food on a regular basis, in contrast to what they would find in nature. The ingredients themselves don't look that impressive at first glance: Seaweed Gluten meal Fish Vitamins Consistency: A dense pellet food that does not soften, lose shape, dissolve or foul the water At All. I am not sure how they managed to formulate it like this. I use this exclusively as a holiday food as shrimp snow just makes too much of a mess in larger quantities for me. The pellets hold shape until all is eaten by the shrimp. The pellets look similar to peat moss/wood chips and do not quite look like the ingredients one thinks it would look in the above ingredient list... Palatability: My shrimp initially ignore it completely when put in the tank. I suspect they might be spoiled with the other foods I give them. Give them A few hours and the shrimp start leisurely nibbling for a while, then going away, and coming back in a few hours to have some more. I find this incredibly interesting: the whole structure- holding, non-fouling food that lasts forever in a tank ( I would just like to clarify: "forever" means a week holiday in this review ). The catch: Not available for purchase in Australia at the moment. Available in USA, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia. Highly recommended as a holiday food option. This Lowkeys Hiden No Esa Secret shrimp food gets ???/5 shrimp tails. View full article

Just cull heavily the ones which dont have the traits you want. When i had cherrys i had red rili blue genes then decided to add some blues. I only wanted breed blues so would isolate them from my rilis and sold off the rilis eventually. In the end my blue rate increased but i also got a couple of greens which was interesting.

They are cool looking shrimp Anthony done a great job with them. I agree with shrimp not being a big thing yet in cork. I'm in the cork area too only have neos at the moment but have tanks for another rack once I get time to set it all up Paudie

Not on this forum that i am aware, atleadt for all types but i do.know some people do keep them or have previously. I have bred albino bristlenose and peppermints previously. Dont rmember the perimeters but if u want them to breed you will require caves for them. The most common ones are cyclinderical and made of ceramic. You just need to work out what size you need as you want one which is not overly big just enough to fit the male and female in snuggly. They will squeeze in then the female will leave and the male will stay in the eggs fanning them. If the cave is too big he may jick the eggs out or just not breed all together. They will generally breed of a night time and need plenty of places to hide and driftwood. Only put 1 cave in per male and bare in mind depending on the breed the males can be territorial. Aim for a ratio of 1m3f bristlenose to increase ur chances.

Quick translation these filters are more efficient than classic sponger filters, there is a compression chamber and the air is injected in the pipe through really fine holes, this has many advantages : -The bubbles of air going up are really fine so the water flow is more powerfull and the bubbles dont explode at the surface -Higher flow with less air

The thing which would make me concerned is the SS filter intake covers everyone has. Surely due to the price they would be of a leaching quality. I wonder if thise can be 3d printed to the point of having such small holes in them for water flow

That's awesome, we should do more selective breeding of our natives to see what we can achieve.

I have a third turned off as it was making too much algae. These are 3W Cree LEDs, the reds are 3W Osram. All selected as they were the correct spectrum. I use a day/night controller which simulates sunrise to sunset. Each driver controls a third of the LEDs with one spare. Yeah it's running at 50% of its potential capacity.

I wish I could do this in my garage but it gets way to hot in summer. I have a shed but worried about creepy crawlies getting in. I need a shrimp room inside the house. Wonder which one of my kids is willing to give up their room lol

Thanks to @Disciple for all the shrimp that arrived safe and sound last week with so many super-generous freebies and up-sizes. I was excited enough to receive them, and finding the extra and bigger tigers was just awesome. They're all growing fast, especially the chocs, and a little red shrimplet stowaway is still going strong too! The light blue tigers were sussing out the yellow neos straight after joining the tank... ... but pretty soon they decided that lowly neos would no longer be permitted on the driftwood and started patrolling and doing sinister poses. They are super-cool to watch. They've done a lot of colouring up since then but any more photos have to wait until this weekend when I get my camera back!

bro you sell me nice stuff and you have to suffer my PDAs ? here's a pic of my favourite light blue cruising... It's tempting me to get better photography lighting because at the moment i can't get shutter speed fast enough for a non-blurry shot of it cruising. And it looks so cool while cruising.
