I often see questions around culling and not selling culls etc.. Anyway, the main reason I cull is so that I can remove poorly coloured shrimp like: So that I can focus on breeding and improving quality of shrimp like: This is a new colony for me and I'm fortunate enough to get a pretty good start with some great coloured Bloody Marys. In the past I've started with nothing but quality similar to the first pic and it's a long and hard path but worth it in the end. All of the above are Sakura grade btw even though some of the pictures look a little on the higher side there are still a lot of patches of transparency that aren't showing up in the images and the legs are not solid. The grading applied should be consistent with the male/female and offsprings. No point grading something as fire red if all the offsprings are of a lower quality. And a couple of pics of happy coexistence

Hi guys, Don't judge this unassuming packet by its plain exterior, it is definitely worth a try... Being a OCD label-reader, I was attracted to this food for 3 reasons: 1) features legumes and other root vegetables not commonly found in shrimp food 2) is fermented so it includes micro organisms in the food 3) is a really good price for imported food 4) no preservatives Seller: Aquakitz Price: $18 Duration of product use: 3 months plus alternate days Shrimp palatability: High I have been feeding this food to my CRS, TB, Cherry, GB, Rili and Tiger. My shrimp mostly prefer this over Shirakura Shrimp ball food, Quattro 2 and Lowkeys- I base this claim on the observation that more shrimp fight over the Fermented food than the others I feed alongside it. Holds shape: reasonably well, does squish apart when moving it with tweezers. Bonus feature: The pellet is of a consistency of such a nature that you can cut it in half with scissors neatly and it holds its shape if you are looking for tiny portions. This is my new favourite without having to pay $36 for a food that the shrimp go nuts for :)

They also seek and destroy pond snails. Very handy. Well done with the babies Paul. I had a couple of these in a 30cm cube on my desk for a while but the tank was too small and they would play "I'm gunna rip your arms off" until one day they took a leap of faith to the floor and dried up on the window sill (their faith was unfounded).

So after having a horrible first experience with shrimp, plecos and planaria. I decided to start up a new tank late Dec 15. So heres the setup. Tank: 3 Foot Komoda 90x45x45 Filter: Aqua one Ocellaris 850 (in box media) + Large single bio sponge filter Lighting: Up aqua Pro Z 90cm Substrate: Mr aqua soil 8L x2 + Up aqua shrimp sand 5L (had it leftover so i just chucked it in) Co2: Yes. Inline atomiser. Heater: None (will get one as soon as winter comes) Cycling process - Just used water straight from the tap and added some Api stress zyme and squeezed wool from an established tank into the cannister. After a week Ph 6.6 Nitrate 0 Nitrite 0 Ammo 0. TDS = didnt check Gh/kh = didnt check. So after about a week i added some neons to speed up the process. Could not wait any longer so i took my chances and added some pandas and CRS within the fortnight. No deaths thankfully ? Since then i have added Oebt + MBB + BB + SW + GB and ottos. Issue #1 Micro organisms. Had a mini outbreak of planaria first week within cycling. Probably due to plants added. Solved with manual removal. Battling limpets daily. Solved by giving up squashing them. Lol. Last week saw a hydra killed it. Solved, none since. Nematodes, copecods (cyclops) and possibly seed shrimps starting to appear after introduction of new driftwood last week. Harmless so mostly ignored. Lesson learnt = WASH YOUR PLANTS AND WOODS BEFORE ENTRY. Issue #2 Algae. Had an outbreak of string/hair, green spot and BGA within the first fortnight. Most likely due to excessive lighting periods and poor circulation from the Aqua one cannister. BGA fixed with less light time and manual removal. Currently on 2nd dose of Algaefix. Seems to be working on most of the string/hair algae. Not so on the green spot. Issue #3 Ph rising. Not sure why it has gone up to 7.2 in the last fortnight. Possibly excessive seiryu stones. Left 1 in there only now. Could also be from poor substrate. Also treating with IAL and mulberry. Alder cones on the way aswell. Deaths: 1 MBB and 1 Otto ? Here a some recent pics. Can anyone recommend some nice background plants for my set up ? And should i use fulvic grains to try and reduce Ph ? And should i just buy a new cannister filter to increase water circulation or just buy a wavemaker ?

Yes most definitely and that is the difficult part, the ladies for me with previous colours seem to colour up a lot sooner than my males between generations. I can't tell from my phone but that cull photo may be a male.

This has been implemented and we have already seen a positive effect on the forum.

I wonder if it has something to do with the age/sex/social structure of the shrimp. When I go spotlighting, I see them in thick densities but it is always one dominant male in a square metre or two, surrounded by ever increasing numbers of smaller shrimp (subdominant males and females). For example, one dominant male, a couple of subdominant males, half dozen adult females, 20 or so juveniles or sub adults. Whenever a dominant male moves into another's territory, the dominant male sees him off with his arms with generally no harm done. I wonder whether the shrimp in aquaria fight it out because they are trying to be alpha dominant.

Like I said, my first list was for me and included more parameters. I made this one more general and shared it with fish groups for people also interested in nano setups. As I put in the note at the end, research always has to be done for compatibility...

Wow, this site looks so full of information :) & thanks for the welcome. I'm in the UK & I'm just begining to cycle my first 30l tank. No idea how I came to be interested in keeping shrimp but the hobby has taken a hold of me.
