I am cycling a 55 gallon (208L) tank. It is divided into 3 sections using Poret foam. There is also a Poret foam corner filter acting as a pre-filter for the canister filter. I haven't seen a tank setup like this so I thought I would share my experiences with all of you :o). Here is the equipment I am using on the tank: 3" thick 30PPI Poret Foam Dividers 2" thick 45PPI Poret Foam Corner Filter CaribSea Flora Max Panted Aquarium substrate (inert) 48" Current Satellite+ Pro Light Aqueon 250W Heater Fluval 306 Canister Filter with Marine Pure media Tunze Osmolator Top Off System Pinpoint pH monitor The tank has been cycling for about 2 and a half weeks. I am using RO water with Shrimpy Daddy products and following the tank cycling procedure on his website. The Ammonia and Nitrite levels were 0 by the end of the second week. If everything continues to go well, I should be able to add shrimp in 2-3 weeks. My current plan is to have a neocaridina and tiger colony in each section. Snowballs with Super Tigers Yellow Cherries with Red Tigers PFRs with OEBTs Here are a few pictures of the tank's progress. This pictures shows the tank after I painted the back. These pics show the equipment being added. I used wire ties to hold the air lines in place. Here is the tank after SD's products were added. This one was taken right after the tank was filled. The corner filter has more than enough room to hide the canister intake, the heater and the pH probe. Added some teddy bear cholla wood. Here it is after I added a few plants. I will add a few more plants this week. I will post a picture afterwards. I would love to hear any comments or suggestions. Thanks.

From what I understand scoria is a type of lava rock, which I take as, "there is no difference".

I think we are there. I'll update the first post with full poster as soon as I get it. @jayc drawing transparencies is always going to get difficult, I'm hoping the follow-up poster with actual photos will resolve that issue.

Just look up your local Hydrophonics shop and see if they carry it, i had to travel to the Gold Coast to get mine about 1hr 15min from me. My local shop did not carry it, most keep Canna Hydroton clay balls which are smooth on the outside whereas Gold Label is uneven surface just like popcorn hence the name. Hope this may help, worth a look.

Neo2FX, google up Gold Label Hydrocorn it is used as a hydrophonics grow media seems almost the same as Aqua clay. Check out their specifications you may be impressed I am using it in my new sump, seems to work fine so far only prob it floats when first installed. I am using media bags and just weigh them down. Cost wise it is extremely economical compared to other media, 30lt bag $35.00, Aqua clay $220.00 This is much more porous than scoria thus much more area for beneficial bacteria to grow.

I've used the lava rock from Bunnings as substrate with no problems. no idea on its use as a filter media, but it should work.

Yes that's the one that's used! What are you trying to workout? Both are inert both have a large surface area for building bacteria p. The pieces stuff looks prettier! I don't personally use scoria but many do..... I do use plain old lava rock(aka bbq fuel) from Bunnings.

She is quite a nice shrimp and has settled in well to tank life, unlike the other shrimp and snails she actually seems quite interested in different prepared foods. I am sort of tempted to get her a mate but at the same time I am loathe to add such a similar looking species to the DAS which are also in the tank. At least this girl I can easily identify, somehow I think that wont be so easy if I had more and not coloured up, let alone the absolute confusion any shrimplets can/ could cause. I guess I could try these shrimp in with my corys, threadfins and dwarf rainbows but there is already riffle shrimp in there and I was waiting to see if the chameleons end up breeding and thriving in the tank.

Is that the AR mini I gave ya?

Well I think I may have to finally get around to flooding this thing, just waiting on a few bits and pieces for the co2 setup to arrive. Some rocks have been removed, some added in and some rearranged. The Pogostemon Helferi has been removed as it just didn't fit in with the look I was going for. Apologies for the blurry picture, quick phone snap and the glass is filthy. A reminder of what it looked like 2 months ago

As well as searching in the tank for any of my notopala snails I also keep an eye out for these guys and they too have interesting spots and colourations. They also have a surprising reach/ stretch out of their shell I like his little yellow moustache
