Thought I would share some pics of a 27,000 litre pond I built for a friend. It is approximately 7 metres long x 4 mtres wide x 1.5metres deep and its deepest end. The pump and filtration used in this project was as follows: 1 x 16000 LPH pump which splits of to run the 2 x waterfalls 1 x 12000 LPH pump that splits off to two seperate gravity fed biological filters 2 x biological Filters that are hidden behing the large waterfall at the end. One is a straight filter and the second unit has 18W UV in the filter. The returns from the filters return to the pond on each side of the large waterfall An airator was also put into the centre of the deepest part of the pond. This helps to airate the water but more importantly helps to expel the nitrogen gases from the water and also helps keep the pond water clearer which in turn aids the filtration. This pond was hand dug and all the rock work was done by hand. Pic1. I would assume most colours would be a possible .... all about selective breeding. I've had gold & purple pop up, but had no success with selectively breeding them..... Also, had a deeper/solid purple previously, but cant find it's pic. Had had random purple base coming out of my blue cherry program occasionally too....I'll see whether I can find some today.

I'm using my culled Blue Body Carbon's to achieve a more luminous/florescent blue with my blue cherry program Colony producing predominantly blue cherry's BUT, with different intensity's....so still a long journey ahead :-)

Hi all! As the title suggests, I'm a newbie shrimper and just got into the aquascaping world. I've always marveled at the aquascaped tanks via Google searches but never got into the hobby, until now. I do have other finances so my budget was a little low to start with, so my nano tank's quite new with very few plants for now. I'm hoping it will flourish soon. Here's my current nano tank setup: 30x17x20 cm glass tank JEBO 501 filter JEBO JB-13 lamp soil and plants were left to the aquascaper. Since I didn't know my plants, sorry, I'm posting some pics here. Wanted to cycle the tank first but my aquascaper friend gifted me with free 6 shrimpies, so freebies are most welcome. Planning to add more soon, but not sure if the tank's good to go yet. If anyone would be so kind as to help me identifying my plants (lol) and if I have female/male shrimps, that would be great too. K1 is a type of media that is used in a moving bed format. It holds good bacteria and during the process of cycling the media the dead bacteria falls off and allows new to grow in its place. It is super efficient and works like a treat! This is a youtube video showing you the media in a sump. I will be putting the heater in between one of the baffles somewhere more than likely, if not I will chuck it into the last section. I put the K1 after the pads to clean as much of the crap out of it first. :)

To be honest I dont really know for certain what the plants are. There is one plant, the main plant on the clump of roots (from a tree), and there is one species of moss along the edge of the glass. both were found on my mums property nearby. The soil is UP Aqua-Soil.

I'd go with cherrys Small tanks can be alittle to unstable for over sensitive shrimp like Crs

Hi AmesLea, Rainwater use and your pH and temp are fine for Cherries. However, the GH and KH seem a bit too high for just rain water without remineralising it (adding Calcium & Magnesium to raise mineral content). Either the reading is wrong (could be old test kits) or something else is raising it. Rocks are the usual culprit. Take out that rock, unless you know exactly what rock it is. GH 11 is on the high side for cherries. Why are you NOT running the filter with the old media from the axolotl? You said you let the tank cycle, how was this done? And how long? I suspect the tank and filters aren't properly cycled. A cycled tank will show some Nitrates. Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrates at 0 is most unusual for a cycled tank. This is something that needs to be checked/confirmed immediately. You mentioned that you can get your LFS to check your water parameters. Get them to confirm your GH and KH again. A TDS pen is a valuable tool, so get one asap. Rainwater is great for shrimps and fish, but it needs minerals added. Otherwise your livestock will not do well. So products like Salty Shrimp GH+ is a must and is easy for newcomers to use - just follow the instructions on the packaging. Inspect your rainwater collection system. Are your tanks metal? Is the roof metal? Any rusting? Is the gutter clogged with debris?

The way to work out which temp is best for getting shrimp to breed is to have a bunch of females with saddles, place them in (for example) 24 or 28*C, and then see how many mate and get berried. Of course controlling for how many shrimp get berried as a result of being moved from a different temperature would be difficult. Any breeding could be a result of a change in temperature rather than being at a specifc temperature. All the anecdotal evidence indicates that higher temps (or a change in temp) stimulates breeding. The reason why I believe the aforementioned study does not provide proof about which temperature is best for stimulating breeding is because the authors were asking a different question - at what temperature do the shrimp grow fastest?
