Those traps caught a lot of them and more kept coming. Anyway I did manage to get some Planaria Zero the day I flew out. I dosed the tank and came back after 2 weeks with no Planaria in the tank. I was a little worried i would be back to dead shrimp as you are supposed to do regular water changes and additional doses but fortunately no dead shrimp. I set the traps again just in case and so far no Planaria in the traps either.

This is a condition called Muscular Necrosis. See the sticky thread "Diseases and Diagnosis". It's not necessarily caused by bacterial infection. As per my post in the sticky, it's can be a condition caused by stress in it's environment. Check your water parameters, and post it here for us to see if there is anything out of the ordinary. Is this a new tank? I ask because I see this condition regularly in tanks that have not been cycled completely. Heat can also be a factor. If the temps in your tank is too hot, it can cause this symptom. But since the weather is cooler now, it's unlikely to be the heat. But I'm not in Adelaide, so I have no idea what temps you are getting there. You don't necessarily need to restart the whole tank. But you will need to check your water parameters asap. Something is stressing it out. Definitely don't add them back into the larger population, until it recovers completely. Thanks for the plug Ineke

This morning I was watering trees in my back yard, as I was watering the Longan what I thought was a grass hopper jumped into the pool around the tree, I have small banks around my trees to hold the water and that allows it to soak in, any way this grass hopper?? stayed in the water?? so when the water soaked in I picked up said grass hopper, NOT it was a 3cm Riffle shrimp, what the F. For the last 2 days I have had 30 Riffle shrimp in a bucker with a loose lid getting ready to ship= no food. The bucket is 30 meters from the trees, it is a 20lt bucket that is 1/3 full, when I looked at the bucket after finding the Riffle, there is about 10 missing, this means they have climbed the bucket, I already knew they could do this, but they got out under the lid? pushed it up? and this one walked through the grass in the direction of the Mulgrave river, the river is about 150mts from my house. What I want to find out is how long can they stay out of water and how far can they travel with there gills full of water like a lot of land based crabs and mud skippers do?? If they lend them selves to being dry but moist, shipping gets a lot easier. I know they climb a local water fall that is 90mts straight drop, this fall is right beside the Barron falls and connects to Streets creek near Kuranda. Wow, that opens a whole new can of worms, now to get one of the local Scientists= Boffins interested. Now I wonder, where are the others and will they make it to the river, they do how ever have to cross two roads and a rail way line to make the first part of the river. DAM I have to go to work, I will add this arvo. Shrimp are tough Bob

Thanks to a massive effort of the team from Shrimp Club Victoria, and their sponsors, this first national championship was a great success. It was great to see all the beautiful shrimp on display, but also nice to meet a few more people including some awesome interstate travelers. Special thanks to you guys for making the effort to come down. I hope the championship next year is even bigger and judging by the success and great vibe of this one, I think that's a certainty. Congratulations to all the entrants and especially prize winners. Anyway I know you're all waiting to see the photos, so here goes. "Blue Dream" Neocaridina davidi First time I'd actually seen this strain. Wow! "Fire Red" Neocaridina davidi Wow again! "Orange Rili (Blue Body)" Neocaridina davidi "Chameleon Shrimp" Caridina sp. NT4 Such a beautiful Australian native species. I really like this pic even if those out-of-focus highlights are just horrible. The rest is good IMO. "Black Crystal / Bee Shrimp (CBS)" Caridina logemanni "Red Crystal / Bee Shrimp (CRS)" Caridina logemanni How's the legs on these things (especially the girl)? I must have liked them to show more than one photo, plus they were pretty well-behaved. "K14"grade CRS Caridina logemanni This line of shrimp are really lovely but weren't as well behaved as the last group. "Tangerine Tiger" Caridina mariae I was really taken with those Tangerine Tigers , they're even nicer in real life than I'd expected. There were a couple of tanks of them but no OEBT, strangely. You noticed how I've tried to apply the new Caridina names above? Sadly that's where it ends - I think everything else are probable to definite hybrids. "Fancy Tiger" Caridina hybrid Even though these guys were just little, they were already really striking. Hopefully there will be plenty more "Fancy Tigers" at the next championship! "Extreme" King Kong Shadow Pandas Wine Reds I'm going to wind it up there for now. There's only a few more pictures to go but they're of some of the loveliest shrimp, so make sure you keep looking.

Yep, have to agree with Muscular Necrosis & jayc's advice is always spot on.

http://shrimpkeepersforum.com/forum/index.php/topic/5052-shrimp-diseases-and-diagnosis/I guess you would have read this article? I had a small outbreak of a bacterial infection after introducing new shrimp into a well established colony -at that time I ddidn't know not to add water from the shrimp bag into my tank and after acclimatisingt he new shrimp I tipped the lot into my tank. I noticed problems in a week or 2 after the new shrimp arrived and started dosing my tanks with Genchem Beta- G -I now swear by the product and use it weekly after water changes. I did lose a few cherries -but the majority survived with little and often water changes- anything too big would stress the shrimp out even more.. However if you only have a few shrimp in your tank you could treat them and then do a new setup -I don't if you can save your media etc I just treated my tank and over a period of time they mostly came good. Personally I would not add those shrimp to your Carbon Rili tank until 100% sure they have recovered and certainly don't add anymore shrimp to the affected tank until you have sorted the problem. As you only have a couple of cherry shrimp affected you can easily pop them into a foam box or small container with a heater and an airstone while you treat them if you need that tank for anything else. Hopefully JayC will see your thread -or even pm him he he will be able to help you through- he is very good at that! Hope it works out for you.

Thanks Kiz, I don't want to mess up the lines as these are stunners. I really want to cross that shadow panda with the BB to see if i can strengthen the blue lines. Now to hunt down a male.

Yeah atm I got the inlet for two cannister filters in the left compartment and the outflow in the right. I will get a third cannister and then have one in each compartment.

Cycle Day 21 Ph seems like it has dropped to 6 or even below so I will try raise it back up to 7. Ammonia was around 2 so I did a 20% water change. Nitrites is zero and nitrates under 5 ppm. Not sure if this means my cycle is almost done or if it went backwards. I will get some ammonia and bring it up to 4 ppm and see what happens after 24 hours. My heater is still set at 29 degrees not sure if I should bring it down yet or not. I have also set up my air pump and the bio spon sponge filters. It also seems to be running fine and best of all quietly. I also put in some plants, lava rock and driftwood. I kept it simple with lots of areas to see the shrimp while also giving them some hiding spots. My brother gave me a 4 foot light that he isn't using so I was pretty happy about that. This is the full tank Left partition Middle partition Right partition I am really happy with how it has all come together. I still got some more mosses to put in, the glass divider between the planted and non planted section will hopefully become a "moss wall". Once the tank is finished cycling and I plant the crypt Parva I have to put into the middle and right sections everything will be finally sorted. Well other than the shrimps and hooking up the chiller. Stay tuned for the next episode... The algae strikes back!!!!! Feel free to ask any questions or give me any advise thanks.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, yes I really like some of the photos too. Chris Lukhaup? I wish. There is a huge gulf between the quality I have shown here and his amazingly detailed close head shots. Following Shrimpy Daddy's excellent advice in his "Photography tips" thread will see any of you take photos like mine or better. As lodo mentioned, the K14 were best in show, a beautiful line I imagine are from beeshrimp oz. The photo is of one shrimp from the winning group, I couldn't get photos of the others (badly behaved). I got pics of whatever shrimp I could, not necessarily the best in the group. BTW the groups were (I believe) at least partly judged on consistency as a group. I'll update my posts with breeder and prize info when I can. The chameleon shrimp was from a group shown by Paul O'leary that I believe won 1st in the native class. Gbang wanted me to mention that the Blue Dream, Fire Red, Orange Rili, CBS and CRS I've shown were on display only, and not eligible for entry in the competition - obviously because their owner was judging. The same is true of the Snow White and probably Skeleton Bee that I'll post below. Different judges though. Anyway... I'll get on with posting the rest of the pictures. Skeleton Bee - Breeder: newbreed This was not the most "skeletony" shrimp in the group, but it was the one that I caught near the glass. Snow White - Breeder: Squiggle Again, this was the only one of the group that I managed to get a shot of. Mosura Blue Bolts - Breeder: beeshrimp oz Damn these were some good looking shrimp. The colour was really good and a bit washed out here. Obviously I really liked them, as with the group below. Mosura Pinto - Breeder: beeshrimp oz. 1st Place, Category 6 (others) How's the 2 little faces in the last picture? That's the last of the shrimp photos from me, hope you enjoyed looking. Hopefully you can join us next year, it should be amazing!
