Hi, I'm a hobby enthusiast from the Netherlands. I'm into shrimping for about 3 years. I have about 6 small tanks around 30 liters and a 60 liter and 100 liter one. I've had all kind of shrimp over the years but at the moment: PRL, PBL, Red spotted head, Snow white, Princess Bee, Blue Bolt, Black and Red Shadow Bee (also know as Taiwan bee) and some HQ fireshrimp (aka Bloody Mary). I'm interested in about everything about shrimp, but lately my focus point to: - Shrimp health. For me it's not acceptable that a whole colony dies without 'no' reason. Still something I see people reporting about over and over again. I believe there must be a strategy to avoid this, even for beginners and low budget shrimpkeepers. - Improve quality. That's why I started with the PRL. Top quality by selecting is something that's got my attention. - Aquascaping and shrimps. - Preserving shrimp line for the future. How to keep the current quality and assure that a Shadow bee or PRL for example will be of the same (or better) quality and health in 10 or 20 years from this moment. On these topics I hope to improve my knowledge and experience and share this with you from time to time. Greetings! Hi All, Now I am not handy in any way, shape or form. But after reading this thread from Squiggle (http://www.shrimpkeepersforum.com/forum/showthread.php/5983-Fixing-a-3ft-tank-amp-making-it-a-sump-filter?highlight=sump) I had to give it a go. I am setting up a rack and needed a sump. Don't look too close as it's not the neatest work. I have put in gutter guard to stop K1 and eggcrate is in now too! Water test tomorrow!!! Thanks heaps Squiggle for your thread and advice.

Thanks Newbreed :-) I can't wait till I finally have all the bits and pieces I need so I can start building it. It's going to take me months to get everything and finish it, but it'll be well worth the wait and I can start picking up things and doing bits here and there. I did realize though, after I read Squiggles recommendation for the sump size, I'm going to have redesign the rack stand and cabinet so I can fit a 3ft sump in the bottom. I'll do that after I find a 3ft before I work out how much timber I'll need and the lengths to cut them. Hopefully I get the plans right by the 9th or maybe 10th time since I decided to go bigger and not the 15th or 20th lol

I am kinda getting okay with the waiting game now! Only seems like a year now instead of what you to feel like FOREVER!!!

A better option would be to breed such specimens in isolation, so that we can have sufficient data to prove that this condition is hereditary

Actually, I'm one of the lucky one to witness the spawning process. Maybe, it is due to I have about 100 of them. Some of my fry survived when I used to use ADA tank, I did not feed them anything but they just survive. This is probably due to they are living in heavily planted tank there are a lot of food source. However after I switch to use all tank with overflow+sump, none survive. I guess they are drain off. :(

One possible use is for spawning. If you are ever lucky enough to see them in the act, the male will wrap his body around the snout of the female in a U shape. The rough skin is probably for grip. And the males seem to use his rough snout to rub the female as he chases her around. When the male is wrapped around the snout of the female, she lays a few eggs, and he will release her, dart around to fertilise the eggs, and return to the wrap position. It repeats until she has laid all her eggs, which isn't many. One parent will stand guard for a while until it is spooked. I should remember to not stick my big face at the tank. I can't help it, I want to see !! Alas, non of the fry in my tank ever survive. Don't know what to feed them, plus the Tetra in my tank probably gobble up a few as well.
