As promised we have a second competition for the month of August. This competition is designed to test your knowledge, planning, researching skills and stretch your imagination. To enter the competition you need to provide a detailed breakdown of your ultimate rack setup. This is to be set in the context that time and money are not an issue. What would you love to build next? Points will be given for detail, innovation and imagination. Be sure to list essential items, e.g. substrate, plants, stand construction, lighting, filtration, media, shrimp/fish stock. The more detail the better. There will be three prizes awarded as follows: 1st Prize - An RO/DI unit kindly donated by FSA 2nd Prize - Breeders n Keepers Magazine & Shrimp poster pack donated by Bossaquaria.com.au 3rd Prize - New Shrimp Keepers Forum T-Shirt donated by SKF Timeframe All entries need to be received by *** 9pm AEST Sunday 24th August *** Winners will be announced in the week following Competitions are open to members with 25 posts and above. Cheers for the comments guys! Just so wrapped with how this has finally come together. The new shrimp from BB have made the difference and are captivating. Having a hard time leaving the rack, just want to keep watching. Lol Woohoo, still another four girls in there ready to berry. Moved the KK boys out so only RR boy and possible BB boy in with them. It's great now the fun is happening again.

I love watching a plan come together, especially when it's a great plan led by a man like nogi. You have the vision that most people lack. Thank you for your countless hours of effort and for following through with your vision, even with a little resistance to parts of it. SKF is a better place for it. Growing a helpful and honest community online in today's world is a remarkable achievement and you should be proud of what you've done to accomplish it. Cheers mick.

This article was forwarded to me by a friend recently. I'm sure a few of you may have come across this already but it may be a worthwhile reminder. Basic rundown on identifying (exotic) mosses. aquatic-mosses.compressed.pdf

I have to missus to thank though she is the 1 that has been asking if we can get shrimp again so ive let her scape and model the tank to try and give her some insight into shrimp/fish keeping

I was the same as I collect carnivorous plants and was very excited to finally see an aquatic carnivorous plant. I removed it from the tank and thought I'd see how it would go at keeping the mozzie larvae at bay in my cp water trays. I have to say it worked a treat during Autumn and I'm looking forward to see how it works in the warmer months. Over winter the cp's don't like to stand in the deep water trays, so I put the UG in a 70 cm tub, outside in the cold, and it's filled the tub.

Seachem flourish is only a micro nutrient fertiliser. It only supplies micro elements, trace elements and other nutrients. These include calcium, magnesium, iron and other important elements. As you are starting out with plants, it's not going to be the fertiliser that will be lacking. Macro nutrients like Nitrogen (N), Potassium (P) and Phosphorus (K) is what your aquatic plants will need most. Seachem Excel or Glutaraldehyde (or Glut for short) is your alternative to CO2. Once you supply CO2 or Glut, your plants will grow quicker along with high light, this is when the plants will draw up whatever NPK is in your tank and soon exhaust it's supply if you don't supplement it with additional fertiliser. Personally, I would just add your plants without these ferts yet. Observe the plants growth and then introduce ferts if necessary. Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus(K) will occur naturally in your tank - Shrimp waste, food, etc are sources of such things. Only Potassium (P) will be lacking. Watch for Macro nutrient deficiencies then add as necessary. Not adding ferts might mean that plants won't grow as fast. But then the plus is that you have less trimming and plant maintenance. On another personal note, I won't add Excel or Glut into my shrimp tanks. Fish tank yes, but not delicate shrimps. Glut is from the Aldehyde after all - it's a disinfectant, and it's the stuff they use in jars to preserve specimens. You know, the stuff you see in museums held in jars with liquid. Some people have used glut or excel with no effects, but I don't want to risk it. Flourish and micro nutrients aren't as essential until you sort out NPK. But again, I would try the plants out without ferts yet. Watch for plants exhibiting micro nutrient deficiencies then add as necessary. My shrimp tank is heavily planted relative to the size of the tank, and plants are all doing well. I don't add any fertiliser apart from Calcium, magnesium, and shrimp food. Get the balance with lighting correct and you will find ferts are not going to be the critical ingredient.
