Hey all,

I have been in to reef for the last 5 years and just within the last 6 months started 2 nano tanks with plants for freshwater. I have been looking at the freshwater invertebrates like shrimp and snails. I have tried some Taiwan Fire Cherry Shrimp but lost them shortly after getting them. I also tried some Orange Sakura Shrimp but lost them also. Any help welcome.

Thanks

Steve

Hey Steve, welcome to SKF. Sorry to hear about your losses. How long after you got them did you lose them? Was it all at once or one by one over time? My initial thoughts lean towards a problem with your acclimation procedure. Could you tell us how you introduced the shrimp to your tanks and what were the water parameters in those tanks?

Sure, the Taiwan Fire Cherry were purchased about 50 miles from me. I poured the bag in a buckle and did dip acclimation. I purchased 10 and they lasted about 10 days losing 1-2 until all gone. The Orange died in 2 days. They came from Florida and it took about 3 days to get. I acclimated the same. PH 6.9 not sure of the other parameters. Plants doing great.

Hi Steve welcome to SKF, mate sorry about your losses.a couple of questions. how long did you cycle your tanks before introducing the shrimp? Were your orange shrimp on the road for a long time before you got them, my feling is that they died from travel stress, anyway keep smiling and enjoy SKF

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I took about 2 hours using drip acclimation. They were in transit for about 3 days.

I think your orange did die from travel stress, three days is a long long time for them, especially if they have had some rough handling and big temperature swings. Were they packed in normal plastic fish bags or breather bags?

I still think that it was stress that killed them. cherries and their different color morphs are not a very tempermental type of shrimp I am assuming that your "Orange Sakura" are in fact Neocaridina Heterododa var "Orange" (Cherry Shrimp) and not the "Orange Bee shrimp"which is a cardina sp shrimp. Called "Sunkist"in the USA. I hope that you can get your next lot quicker and in better condition.

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
