10,000 litre Fish Pond

This is another pond I built a while ago now. There was a small pond originally badly overstocked and desperately needed to be extended. There was over 50 fish in the pond from 4-5 inches to over a foot long. It was a challenge because the person I built it for wouldn't  remove a kumquat tree and there was also a challenge to improve the filtration using his existing equipment. This pond was about 10 metres long. The ugly shed wall on the side of the pond has since been removed and a shade sail has been put over the pond to help stop bird issues, unfortunately after they had a good feed. The landscaping to the rest of the garden was done by the owner and personally not what I would have done, but he was very happy with the outcome of the pond.

 

The pond was originally smaller than the bottom section shown in this photo and about 400mm deep.

It was dug out to about 600mm at the shallow end and went to i metre deep in the area of the rock waterfall. I then created a small island and created a shallow beach area as I mentioned in the previous post.

The idea was to create a top pond with the wok waterfeature in it and this was filled via the return from the filter that was hidden behind the top pond. I then put a good layer of cleaned river pebble in this pond to act as a biological filter as well. The idea being that it would assist the mechanical filtration. This is similar to filtration methods used in natural filtered ponds.  I then split the return from the outlet of the pump to create a small waterfall on the long rock to the right of the waterfall and the it was again split to the filter and to four outlets that were built into the actual rock wall.

This would look great decked out with palms, ferns around the outside of it.

 

You obviously enjoy doing this, you've got a lot more patience then me, haha.
