'nano' tank setup - How many cherries?

Hi Guys, 

As per the picture I have a 20 x 20 x 25cm tank on my desk at work that's been cycling with a lonely guppy for a bit over three weeks, I'm yet to test it to confirm but if the cycle is finished I'd like to drop a couple of cherries in there. How many would you start with?

I'd love to get some gold vine for it, but for now a bit of mopani and some Java Moss is the best I can do.
It's a bit of an experiment really, mostly to see whether it bothers my work mates having it on my desk! 

 

Filtration is a HOB from a 20L setup governed slightly to reduce the flow.
Substrate is an inert crushed glass type gravel. 
WP: Rain water from colorbond roof. 
TDS is in the teens, Looking at boss mineral balls potentially, or one of these mineral brick things you can get from tech den that I forget the name of, or if my wife bankrupts me again (read: does any shopping) I'll just condition some tap water that's usually around 2-300 and mix it in. 
PH ~6.8, possibly a little lower with the driftwood I'll test again before anything new goes in. 

Really basic setup so any comments, questions, stupid mistakes that are glaringly obvious to you but that I've overlooked?

I have an 8L tank on my desk at work that I started with 2 males & 4 females, by the end of the year I have over 40 in there & they were breeding quite well. :thumbsu:

I have a 20L that housed up to 60 RCS without much impact to water parameters before I culled some.

Shrimp have a very small bioload. So as long as the filter is well matured and can keep up with breaking down the waste, then you can keep quite a few shrimp. This means you test the water parameters regularly.

 

Choose a filter media that has a large surface area like Marine Pure spheres, and that will help ensure your small filter is capable of keeping up with your livestock in the small tank. I just bought some Marine Pure spheres myself  :rock:

      One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

      It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

      I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
