Hi everyone, I thought I might just show you my little cube that I have had planned for months and have finally got it all setup. I`m using DSM just with some HC but I plan to put some Staurogyne in between the rocks and some Blyxa Jap. behind the rocks :)

Tank: 30cm Aqua One Cube

Substrate: 6L of ADA Aqua Soil

Heater: Fluval 50w

Light: 20w Floodlight

Filter: Cheap HOB from eBay

Hardscape: Yuan Rocks

Flora: HC, Blyxa and Staurogyne "Tropica.

Fauna: A grade CRS and possibly some yellow cherries.

CO2: Just some DIY with ceramic diffuser.

Ferts: Not really planned yet, any suggestions?? Will probably go with Dino spit, and Dino pee.

Criticism appreciated, thanks for looking smile.png155j4gm.jpgbgdwn.jpg2gv3q8j.jpg

  • 2 months later...

I've been eyeing off a cube at a shop here, about 18 inches square, for some time - VERY tempted but ive noticed here at pet stock you can get a normal 2ft for $50 which is $30 less than the cube.....but cubes look so good! Very unsure.

Yeah I was tossing up between a 2ft and a cube and I just plunged in and got a cube. My cube was $50 buts it`s only 30cm soo.. Oh and Just a very small update, even though it`s been months. The HC got overrun by clado so that wasn`t too good so the tanks now mostly moss (Flame, subwassertang, weeping, peacock and US fissidens) but STILL no shrimp.. I know it`s hopeless but I`m going to either some yellow or orange soon :D

Well it`s not much of an Aquascape anymore, more of a shrimp tank and theres alot of snail that I`ve tried and tried to get out but here are some pics:

One of three crystal red shrimp (two are berried :D)

An Orange cull (Nicely given by Wayne), I am going to start culling when some of the berried females hatch out some babies.

That`s alright!! I`m hoping to get rid of the snails, I`m taking as many out as I can see most days and yet they still appear (Probably out of the moss). I`ll take a few more pics when I put some Hydrocotyle in that I ordered, hopefully then the snails will be gone and if your lucky the algae gone :D

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
