Red rili blue body - red almost bred out.

Hi ,

 

I'm posting some shrimp pics i purchased last year to ask others about the black coloration on some of my shrimp. The bluer specimens appear to have the odd small black spot. One older shrimp has a fair bit of black coloration.The colony is Red rilis with a blue body but the breeder was selecting to remove the red and obtain a blue velvet. From 5 shrimp i have a sizeable colony now in a display tank. I have a mixture of blue velvet-ish, clearish, and red rili-ish phenotypes. 

 

 

That weird big blue and black and red shrimp (photos 2 + 3) was one of the originals and it looks like she isn't well and hasn't for most of the time I've had her but she lives and has had one litter i know of. She is the most blue shrimp in the colony. Is she so blue because of genetics or is it due to her odd coloured midsection (reflection of light) or disease or something else? Also out of the bluer shrimp, some of these have red/black areas as well. (seen in photo 2 and 3 on second blue shrimp). If my noticing black spots on certain (usually blue) shrimp is this genetics or disease? Another, not shown has black on its tail with some red. 

 

 

Am i getting cool shrimp (black rilis ) or disease?

I would guess that the blue are evolving to black as the blue is a base colour for black in shrimp. Although I have never seen this before, that is not to say it can't happen as shrimp keeping is still in it's infancy compared to the rest of the aquarium hobby. This is definitely something I would be exploring to see what comes of it, very intriguing development.

Iv got a couple of bluer ones in a breeder and iv got two juvies in there are so dark blue they look black and i thought that was wierd aswell. But definately gonna see where they end up

Genetics is so unpredictable , probably gene for black color unfolding itself.

Well in those pictures she is from the original stock and the others surrounding her are probably a generation or two behind her but yeah she is a big (weird) shrimp.

 

I selected these pictures to show this oddity on her coat; the peeling bit has been like that for ages. This shrimp had some issue way back where its 'nose' was facing up 90 degrees to her body (another thread on here - caused by damage or disease don't know) and i thought she would die but she recovered and the nose its still a bit off but better. She breed after this incident as well iirc. Could both instances be a moulting issue? Only shrimp in the colony to have that.

 

I do have four "all blue" shrimp in a separate tank for breeding purposes and i will try to breed these "blue with black bits" variants as well. As far as this mutant shrimp goes, i am not sure whether to quarantine her or selectively breed her?

Yeah, it's most likely a moulting issue if it got a bent rostrum (nose) and peeling shell. So that is unlikely to be passed on. 

The red in it's genes might get passed on however.

i kinda have something like that too, red rilly hybrid with blue jelly, there is the normal red of the red rilly but the transparent part is light blue

This is just a natural evolution of the red rili, we call this blue gene red rili as it has started to show the blue in the normally clear part, the next step to this is the blue velvet which is all light blue shrimp.

You are correct, blue velvet, blue jelly, blue dream are all just commercial names created for blue cherry shrimp & I do normally just use the colour & species to keep it simple but, as I am holidays at the moment, in this case I forgot (my head has been more focused of fishing, lol)
