Yes you read it right, I am going fishing for Oscars with a rod and reel.

Across the road from me, if I turn my head to the right I can see it, there is a ornamental pond about 1 hectare that is split level and has a water fall in the middle, away some one let Oscars go in it years back and yesterday walking across the bridge I spotted 8 x 25 to 30cm Oscars, I have seen them there many times walking to the shops.

So today I am going over with barbels hooks and I am going to have a fish, i will also take my camers.

I have a pond ready for them, so they are coming home with me, alof 50 meters. For those in Cairns it is the lakes at Forest gardens, the foot bridge behind the old sales office.

They are really good colour to, reds and tigers.

That sounds like good fun Bob. Be cool if there were peackock bass in there, they would be fun to catch on rod and reel.

I have to hang my head in shame NO FISH, but I do have a good excuse! some one started to through a stick in the water for there dog and that put the Oscars off the bite.

It is my excuse and I am stricked to it.

Don't let that put you off! Keep trying, perhaps use some different baits as well. Try and get as many as you can so the native fishies can live in peace :). I look forward to some pics!

Where these one are they are no trouble, its man made and goes straight to salt water in flood time or is a dry creek bed in dry times. Nice Oscars though.

It is my intention to catch as many as I can and I will sell them when they settle in. There is Jewels, Swords, Platys, Guppies and Gouramis in there to, it is also the place where council dumps excess Rainbow fish from there breeding program, at times the rainbows can be so thick there it not funny, I have never seen them in those numbers any where.

There is a place here in Victoria that is similar (Hazelwood Pondage) Full of eels, carp, and a host of various tropical species ... mainly Oscars, Tilapia, Red Devils and african cichlids.

There was a rumor that someone had released Discus in there, but on-one has come across them. The lake is kept very warm as it's used for the cooling towers of the power station ...........

Best baits seems to be seet corn or garden worms, on a very small hook

I am going to try fish bits today and if it don't work worms it is, I had not thought about the good old garden worms TA heaps pappy

      That shrimp itself survived the molt just fine, but left about half dozen eggs still in the shell. I haven't measured KH in a really long time, but assume it is zero since I don't have any rocks besides a few small pieces of lava rock.  Maybe you have unwanted rocks in your tank?  My tank is the "long" style which I really like because I have a HMF on one end, and a pump outlet spout that shoots water all the way to the other end.  I have no idea how many shimp it can support because I don't really understand waste management in a tank.  Shrimp poop eventually turns into mulm, but then what?

      Thats a great photo, beautiful blue bolt, I hope it survived the molt without dropping the eggs! I think I can just about see some black dots (eyes) on the central egg but can't be 100% sure. I used to (and plan to again) do weekly water change of 10-15% but if you do too large or quick (not drip in new water) that would likely trigger a molt. What KH are they in, my new setup is sitting at (and refusing to budge) KH 3 and PH 7.5 so I may have to settle for neocaridina shrimp this time as opposed to the caridina I want, though not looking/deciding just yet, give the tank a bit more of a run in! Tap water here starts at kH 14, tds 320, when filtered goes to KH 0 and PH 6 but when put in the tank keeps going to KH3 and PH 7.5 despite 3 x 50% water changes???? You may be at 'maximum capacity' with only 20L tank especially if the tank is a cube type rather than shallow type?

      Right now this tank only has blue bolts and golden bee (red bolts?).  The eggs start off all brown, but at the end, I notice that some are kind of a clear pink-ish color.  So I don't know if that is the egg color of dud or golden bee.  Picture of shrimp only about half hour before molting. The water is always RO + remineralizer, so it should be ok. The tank seems to still be on a "good streak" ever since I started the regimen of weekly water change, monthly gravel vac and plant trim.  The point being to keep the amount of waste low and removing moss / floating plants so that the nitrates go towards growing algae.  At one point, I had three berried females, but only netted about half dozen babies by the end, due to this early molting problem.  There might be about 30-40 shrimp total in 5 gallons, but still very few full-sized adults.
