Shrimp in Adelaide

For those who are also here - I just called Seaview Aquarium (Anzac Hwy and my chosen fishy store) as they had some Darwin shrimp the other week.  They currently still have some as well as the normal cherry and now stock CR's and blue rilli.  I think they will be getting a few more varieties in too at some point.

I could happily curl up in a corner and live there.  If you are looking for cheap cube tanks The fish bowl was the place to go (haven't been for a year).  They had a stunning cube that was about 40cm squared for $80 or less (that was the biggest, several sizes availalbe). I've lusted after that one many a time.  I think my next tank I'll custom make for shrimpies and do all the work in the back myself.

Do Seaview still have the deli ticket system still going? Was amazed customers took a ticket and waited for their number to be called out to be served. Brilliant but hilarious at the same time..

Very biased, but Seaview is great.

They take a lot of time with their fish, quarantine/holding rooms where fish are housed before selling.

Very knowledgeable staff.

They quite often have CBS and CRS.

I was one of the managers running the AQIS rooms and holding sheds (no longer working there).

I Started breeding RCS out in the back sheds there 6yrs ago to sell to the public.

Thats where my shrimp love began!!

Was a dream job!! :thumbsu:

Elite in Mt Barker looks pretty good. My boy sold them a few CRS and got his first couple of Blue Velvets from them.

Its good to see some of the LFS getting more than just RCS.

I pretty much only get my fish from Seaview, I've never had any issues.  I won't say where but I did start getting a few bits from another store that I thought was pretty good until my electric yellow came down with something that I could only seem to match as TB.  No idea if that is what it was for sure but I lost everything except my blue ram.

Back to Seaview I go.

Mind you, Marine Plus is pretty good also.

I haven't been to Marine for over a year and they were selling crystals, red I think they were, but don't take them too seriously about time when they say they are going to do something.  Got told about the Siamese fighter set up and how it was going to be put up over the weekend, took 6mths.  Same for expanding the fish.  I was visiting almost every weekend and nothing had been done in about a year.

I haven't been to Marine Plus but a friend sells to them and he said they were cycling the tanks so maybe it is happening now. Seaview bought a huge amount of shrimp over the last couple of months mainly CRS, Rilis and Blues.

Took the TARDIS (my car) out for a spin after college to Seaiview - finally found where they are keeping the shrimpies.

I doubt I will be investing in any more Cherries ( unless I can get some really nice Reds - I gave all mine away and actually miss them) my next shrimp purchase will be Tigers and pure TB , I don't have any Tigers and only 2 TB - the others are TBM. I also want some Natives but I will be sourcing mine from the forum not a shop.

They were running low when I was there last week, some blue but none of the rest (may have been some CR's).  Might pop over this weekend.

Was just there, apparently someone cleaned out the new supply that arrived today.  They are expanding like crazy soon for shrimp, also have "sunset" cherries now (orange of course) and some others that I can't remember.

I know who is supplying most if not all of their shrimp. It's hard to keep up with the demand. They are even taking lower grade shrimp just for people to get started.,its good to see shops finally catering for shrimp now.

They are so easy to take care of Im surprised they aren't doing the breeding themselves.

They don't like to have the smaller ones so I guess it's easier to buy them in cheaply than to keep them for any length of time. The longer they have them the more chance something will go wrong.

When I was managing/running their holding sheds there I was breeding RCS in their holding/Quarantine shed. I started doing this 6 or so years ago and the tank was still going when I left there. Im pretty sure that the don't have that breeding tank any more as I think (as Ineke said)  its cheaper to buy these shrimp than have a tank setup especially for breeding the shrimp (I haven't worked there for a few years).

I was in the other day and they had Yellow, Sunkist, F7/F8 Mishlings (from KK, Bb and Panda ) and Blue Velvets in their latest shipment with prices pretty reasonable.

They are looking at getting in some 'fire' reds and Carbon Rillis in the near future.

And then maybe higher end TWB etc as well as some specialist shrimp products I think.

Its good to see  local shops getting in to shrimps other than RCS, can only be good for the hobby and hopefully more people getting involved.

I spoke to one fella buying some Sunkists who was just getting into the hobby.

Did you tell him about SKF lol :P

When i lived in Sydney a year and a half ago one of the fellas at my then LFS said the manager gave all the staff their own shrimp tank setup to breed CRS at home to stock the shop. I have only ever sold albino bristlenose to a fish shop :)

LOL I did actually. I asked if he's on any shrimp specific forums and he named an overseas one and said he's on a couple of others.

So I spruked SKF and said how we are the best Aussie one I've seen with great people and a lot of info on there aswell.

And he agreed and said he was already a member. :D

The way the Adelaide shrimp scene is going it might be time to have a little old Adelaide SKF meet and greet day in the future. lol

I would hazard a guess that perhaps those eggs were unfertilized and thereby unviable? Did the eggs change colour, usually yellow to grey as the yolks used up, or any eyes in the eggs. Is your water ok, using RO remineralised and the parameters in range, as I have heard others say that if the water isn't good it can 'force' a molt? How is it going overall, do you have a good size colony in the tank, you may have reached 'maximum occupancy' as a tank can only support so many occupants.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.

Hello! I have a tank that currently does not contain shrimp, but does contain neon tetras which I am currently treating for Ich, as well as some bladder snails. Shrimp will be a later addition, likely cherry shrimp but I'm still doing research just to be sure. Initially I'd intended to buy some sort of Ich-fighting product that contains malachite green after doing a decent bit of research on it, most of which indicated that it should be shrimp-safe so I'd be good if I ever needed to use it again once shrimp were actually introduced (though I should note I'm aware shrimp can't get Ich, I'm more wondering in case the tetras could get Ich again, or something else that responds to similar medication). I ended up not being able to find any MG-containing products without either having to travel quite far or wait multiple days for delivery (which I was worried could lead the Ich to be fatal), and ended up picking up 'Top Fin Ick Remedy', a product that contains gentian violet which is a triarylmethane dye like malachite green. The bottle has two slightly differently worded warnings about its use with invertebrates ("not recommended for" and "not safe for" respectively), but when I'd been researching malachite green, I'd also heard of products that contain MG but not any other ingredients that would be harmful to inverts still being branded with warnings that they could be harmful, just as a "just-in-case" since the manufacturer didn't test it on any inverts, and I'm wondering if maybe it could be a similar situation here. I'm having a very very hard time finding information about gentian violet's use in fishkeeping at all though, it seems currently extremely uncommon. What I will say though is that I'm on day 2 of treating my tetras with it, and the bladder snails seem just fine -- in fact today I noticed what looked to be a bladder snail that appeared to be newly hatched (because of its size) that I hadn't seen before that was zipping around the tank without issue. But obviously, shrimp are not snails, and bladder snails are also notoriously hardy little guys, so what I'm seeing right now could easily be totally inapplicable to cherry shrimp. It might even be inapplicable to other species of snails, for all I know. Has anyone else here ever used anything that contains gentian violet in a tank that actually does contain shrimp? Were they okay, or should I make sure to not use it once shrimp are added?
