Which Salty Shrimp

Fishnbe

Recommended Posts

I was about to purchase couple of things from Squiggle/Boss Aquaria.

I am getting some Benibachi Mineral as well as some salty shrimp.

Im loosing a few CRS when they moult and was wondering wether it is better to get Bee shrimp mineral GH+

or

Shrimp Mineral GH/KH + for them to add to rain water/RO (Funds are allowing only 1 of the salty shrimps at the moment)

I also have Blue cherries in there that are doing great (Thanks Ineke).

Glad to hear the blues are doing OK. I only use GH+ now for all my tanks - the Cherry varieties seem to do very well in it and even though I still have some GH/KH left I don't bother with it and it certainly makes water change days easier .

Thanks everyone. They are great Ineke. Separated blue velvets and blues from chocs. With a few dark blue from choc bubs coming through.

Waiting with anticipation for the package squiggle.

  • 9 months later...

i would like to know....

1. is salty shrimp a better remineral as of today?

2. its even good to use with higher grade CRS?

3. what is the salty shrimp GH/KH use for if salty shrimp GH is for CRS?

1. It's one of the better products for shrimp specifically. Mosura mineral plus ultra is another good one for shrimp. But you have other brands as well like Seachem Equilibrium, or Kent's RO Right, which is more for fish. The shrimp specific brands have more Calcium, which the shrimp needs.

But once you know what they product is made of, it's dead easy to make your own. And a lot cheaper. The above products are just convenience, it's all premixed.

Heck, you could technically even remineralise using tap water, which has a higher TDS, but has other unwanted chemicals in tap water.

Or you could even use Marine salts like Red Sea Coral Pro ($49 for 7kilos!).

Technically you could even use crush coral chips, baking soda and epsom salts. Just remember, all these other non shrimp alternatives have different Calcium:Magnesium ratio. (edit - and you need to know what you're doing).

But they are all just Calcium, Magnesium with a dash of potassium, and a pinch of trace elements, and a splash of this and that.

2. I don't think that's the right question. It's good for Reverse Osmosis and Rain water (and to some extent really soft tap water). It's not shrimp type specific. You adjust the amount used in the water to match the ideal parameters required for CRS, or Tigers, or Cherry or Taiwan Bees, etc...

3) Salty Shrimp GH/KH is targetted for Neocaridina shrimp - the cherry shrimps basically. It's got a bit more potassium (I think) to raise KH. Neocaridina like a lttle more KH than Caridina crystal shrimps (according to salty shrimp, although I don't really buy it).

Salty Shrimp have a product for Sulawesi shrimp as well. All three products have the same ingredients, just in differing amounts.

To add to what JayC has already said, KH (carbonate hardness) is really only required to regulate the pH. If you need the pH to be higher, you need to increase the KH value. Most people keeping high grade CRS and Taiwan bees run very low pH levels and 0dKH, so a KH boost is not required. Therefore just the GH+ is normally recommended for these.

SaltyShrimp GH+ is specifically for remineralizing Reverse Osmosis filtered water. You should also use some active substrate, like Benibachi Fulvic soil. This works hand in hand with the SaltyShrimp minerals to buff the water to the correct pH & get the conditions a good as possible for Caridina sp. (Inc CRS). For CRS, I would suggest about 4-6cm depth. :D

Ok, when it come to shrimp, I always answer questions as they are answered. I never take it for granted what people know about shrimp. :thumbsu:

I would highly recommend getting mineral balls as they help stabilise the water &, IME, they help to prevent algae outbreaks (I have done a thread about the difference of starting a tank with & without them). I would also recommend mineral powder to suppliment the depletion of minerals from the water that is used daily by shrimp breeding & moulting. A good bacterial booster, like my Boss Booster (shameless plug, lol) is a very good idea as well, because shrimp diet mostly consists of grazing on the biofilm, it is a very good idea to have something that will boost the production of that. :thumbsu:

Also IALs are an essential I always add too.

Plus an air driven sponge filter is also great for extra filtration but also a a good grazing spot for your shrimp.

Maybe consider a shelter type ornament for your shrimp to get some cover when they moult.

I have just done the planned weekly maintenance and 10% water change and everything 'seems' to be going very well, I saw 12 blue and 9 panda shrimps so am very happy about that as there are always some hiding (and they are small) so there must be more than that at this point. Early days yet (especially with the off parameters) with the blues only been in the tank for a week and the pandas for 2 weeks. Not seen any dead ones yet and the shrimp seem happy enough and beautiful colour and pattern, all small so must be young! Parameters were TDS 159, GH 7-8, KH 1-2, PH 7 yesterday so still a bit off the usual ideal! Hopefully these figures come down slowly in time, I used pure RO water for the water change so Tds should drop 10. I will get a different PH test kit with a narrower range/increments as the one I have measures in .5 increments over a wide range which is probably a bit much. I bought these shrimp because the sellers parameters (PH 6.8) were the closest to mine so hopefully it will work out long term. I changed my zerowater filter as well, as the old one was measuring TDS 6 so passed its best. I will definitely overnight drip acclimate shrimp in the future, not that I plan any more in the forseeable future. I will add/edit photo when available, hopefully later today.

All done now, I drip acclimated 11 blue bolts and 6 blue steel overnight and they are now in the tank so now is just wait and see if this works. 28 shrimps have now been put in and I have yet to SEE a dead one so fingers crossed! A couple of pictures of some below; I don't plan on buying any more shrimp so plan this to be a blue shrimp tank, though if it doesn't work out I have seen some female bettas I would like, but hopefully the shrimps will work out. The water parameters are still the same as before, so a bit off! I need to sort out what foods and shrimp stuff I have in the drawers and cupboard tomorrow as it's been a while, hopefully I find a shrimp lolly so I can give them one/part of those tomorrow, and it may bring as many of the shrimps out as possible.  Fingers crossed everyone...........
