Thanks, just a shrimp beginner. Here's my first shrimp tank. post-938-140046689911_thumb.jpg

The reason why I joined is because I want to find out why my blue velvet and blue rili are dying one by one. I checked out the water perimeters at my local lfs but they say the water conditions are good. So not sure why. I have lots of white worms, planaria, hydra and spring bugs I think. But these are adults dying and not the babies. So just wandering what I'm doing wrong. Any advice you can suggest would be great.

Hi jason nice tank, there could be a few reasons.

If it's only adults it could be age but bugs and hydra aren't good, they kill shrimp.

The white worms I'm presuming are small and thin, if so that's from

overfeeding. Shrimp can go a couple of days with out food that's easily solved.

Take your water back to to your lfs and ask for the readings then put them up here, they might be ok but they can give clues.

Also do you use tap water and declorinator for water changes and how often?

Have you added anything to the tank lately?

Alot to take in but it gives the best chance of helping.

If you ask your LFS to check water again, get them to test TDS, Calcium and Magnesium as well.

 

Can't quite see the thermometer ... what temp have you set the tank to?

 

When the LFS tested your water, did they mention what pH, KH or GH you have?

Welcome to the forum, definitely many different things could be causing the problem, how much & how often do you do water changes? What substrate spare you using? Do you have any rocks in the tank? Hopefully with some more info we can work out what's going on in your tank. :D

I fed once every three days now but still thin white worms. How do I kill the bugs and hydra?

PH was 6.8 every thing else was at min. He used a test strip that had all the test in one strip.

Yes changed water with tap water and declorinator every three days some times added the fluval shrimp mineral n nutrifin plant grow n nutrafin cycle. He told me that I should change water every two weeks. Is that why change water too often. Usually only change one gallon every three days. I would let the water sit in a bucket for a least a day to do the water change.

Nothing added lately.

K will ask for TDS calcium and magnesium. Hopefully they will have those test.

Temp set at room temp 24-25.

Kh and gh were between first n second colors on the test strip.

Using fluval stratum substrate n no rocks.

Thank you every for the help. I went from 15 down to five now. I also have cherries in there but none of those dies. Only the blue and green ones which is really frustrating.

The best product for getting rid of Hydra & planaria is Internal Parasite Clear, it has ne effect on shrimp, even at double strength dose. It is available from Aquotix Online in their medications section. :thumbsu:

 

If your GH was only on the first one then it's a bit low but we really need a better value to gauge this as the "dip" tester aren't very accurate. :D

 

Also, all the shrimp you have in there are Neocaridina Davidii & will crossbreed, I suggest you separate them before they do. :biggrin:

Will also separate them.

Is there any other shrimp with different colors that can go with the neocaridina davidii that are easy n won't cross breed?

Lost another blue one this morning, only 4 blue velvet/rili left, is the conditions for the blues different from the cherries? Because I haven't lost one cherry but almost all the blue ones.

Hey jason welcome to skf. Cherries are generally more hardy than blues or rilis, so no surprise that they are dropping off first. Hopefully one of the water tests will point out an obvious problem

      That shrimp itself survived the molt just fine, but left about half dozen eggs still in the shell. I haven't measured KH in a really long time, but assume it is zero since I don't have any rocks besides a few small pieces of lava rock.  Maybe you have unwanted rocks in your tank?  My tank is the "long" style which I really like because I have a HMF on one end, and a pump outlet spout that shoots water all the way to the other end.  I have no idea how many shimp it can support because I don't really understand waste management in a tank.  Shrimp poop eventually turns into mulm, but then what?

      Thats a great photo, beautiful blue bolt, I hope it survived the molt without dropping the eggs! I think I can just about see some black dots (eyes) on the central egg but can't be 100% sure. I used to (and plan to again) do weekly water change of 10-15% but if you do too large or quick (not drip in new water) that would likely trigger a molt. What KH are they in, my new setup is sitting at (and refusing to budge) KH 3 and PH 7.5 so I may have to settle for neocaridina shrimp this time as opposed to the caridina I want, though not looking/deciding just yet, give the tank a bit more of a run in! Tap water here starts at kH 14, tds 320, when filtered goes to KH 0 and PH 6 but when put in the tank keeps going to KH3 and PH 7.5 despite 3 x 50% water changes???? You may be at 'maximum capacity' with only 20L tank especially if the tank is a cube type rather than shallow type?

      Right now this tank only has blue bolts and golden bee (red bolts?).  The eggs start off all brown, but at the end, I notice that some are kind of a clear pink-ish color.  So I don't know if that is the egg color of dud or golden bee.  Picture of shrimp only about half hour before molting. The water is always RO + remineralizer, so it should be ok. The tank seems to still be on a "good streak" ever since I started the regimen of weekly water change, monthly gravel vac and plant trim.  The point being to keep the amount of waste low and removing moss / floating plants so that the nitrates go towards growing algae.  At one point, I had three berried females, but only netted about half dozen babies by the end, due to this early molting problem.  There might be about 30-40 shrimp total in 5 gallons, but still very few full-sized adults.
